Didnt pass smog :( Now What?!

Everything passed easy except for the
NO part. (Nitrous Oxide) I passed the 25mph test but failed by 38 points on the 15mph test. I have no check engine light or anything, and I have high miles about 162,000 so Im guessing I might have a lot of carbon build up. Is there any additives you guys recommend to try and clean up some carbon build up? Car has fresh oil and spark plugs. If additives dont work I might try changing the egr valve. But rather try a cheaper route first. Thanks Guys

What are the other numbers looking like. Post them up if you can. Maybe I can help you out.

Are you in California? How was the weather when the test was run? Was the car fully hot? Failing for Nox at 15 and passing at 25 for same thing is usually because technicians don't warm up the car (applies mostly to Catalysts) properly. Don't just start dumping that seafoam in there. Post up the numbers for Nox and HC for both 15 and 25 MPH.

High NOX usually results from inadequate EGR (exhaust gas recircultion). This happens due to blocked passages in the EGR manifold passages and ports into the intake manifold. Clean and you should be good. Easy on 2.5TL, but much more difficult on 3.2TL. Check DIY's and search for detailed procedure. I remember one for removing intake manifold that was good.

good luck

^ I second Texas. Get a few cans of brake parts cleaner, a long sharpened flathead screwdriver, a wire brush, and some time. Usually the culprit is the pipe, then the EGR chamber which the pipe leads to on the intake manifold. The carbon buildup there was horrendous on my Type II manifold, surprisingly clean on my 3.5 manifold, and OK on my Type I.

~Cheers~

Part 17 is removed to access ports and channels to be cleaned. If you can't find this, better get help.

That's great, but you should still clean out the EGR pipe. Here's a pic from the Type II I mentioned. This is the chamber:

This was a manifold I had picked up so it was never on my car in this condition. The differences in response and performance were due the the design itself, so it's not valid here.

The carbon was so black, I had trouble taking pictures of it. My phone wouldn't focus on it!

It came with free oil.

~Cheers~

Yeah, no need to clean out the entire thing. I did it on this one because it was off the car already, and it was extremely dirty both inside and out.

Yeah, it's not normal, either. For the mileage on the car, I'd say the guy used shit gas and shit gas only.

I have to say, though, the feeling I got after getting out most of the sludge was a good one.

~Cheers~

Gasoline does not cause EGR buildup. It results from exhaust gas vapors condiensing on colder passages. Fix is to keep it hot, which took Honda/Acura a long time to figure out apparently. A lot of short trips might cause builidup to occur more rapidly.

I've not heard of this problem w/ other manufacturers to the extent of Honda/Acura.

good luck

Texas, could it be coincidence, then that on my original motor, which I knew to have been run on horrible gas for more than half its life, and was driven on the freeway almost exclusively, had more buildup in the chamber than my new motor, which was only a city car sipping Chevron and Shell Supreme?

~Cheers~
