Unhappy Alternator problem??!!

Hey guys, wondering if anyone can help me out..Well, a few weeks ago, my car started to act up on me. i have a 97 3.2TL and every once in a while, when I tried starting my car, it would do nothing. Then I would turn it back off then try again and it would start up with no problems. Just last week, my car would not start at all..The lights, radio, horn worked all fine..I thought my starter had died on me..My friend said it could be the battery and to just get it checked, so I did..Anyways, the battery was good but needed to be recharged..After re-charging the battery, I had my alterantor checked..The guy said that when my car is at idle, the alternator is not charging the battery..The number coming out of the tester (he hooked it up to the battery) was at around 12 point something..He said it should be at 13 or more..However, when you press the accelarator, the number goes up a past 13..He told me that my alternator is bad and its not charging my battery when its idle..So far, so good but I'm afraid that my battery might go on me when I least expect it..First off, Is my alternator bad?? And secondly, where can i get an alternator for a good price if I do need one??

As long as battery has some charge, you should not get silence when you turn the key. See the "sticky" post on starters under Problems and Fixes. I suspect you have worn out starter solenoid contacts, which can be repaired. I believe the starter is difficult to remove on the 3.2L engine. Search for posts on this issue if you're DIY.

good luck

Yup, sounds like a bad starter. Best bet is to have yours re-built, will be stronger and cheaper in the long run. Pain in the A$$ to remove, have to pull the driver's side cv-shaft, and the bolts are a bitch, but can be DIY if you can handle being without a car for a day (time it takes to send starter out to be re-built).
