worst case with not changing the timing belt
 

just wondering if anything serious is going to go wrong if the timing belt broke other than the car not working, could it possibly cause the pistons to hit the valves? im in school right now and id like to put it off for a while, i have 170K on it right now.

actually there is a chance that it was done already, does anyone know how to check if it has been done already?

170k miles.. it should have been done btw 60k-90k (tune up). if your at 170k and it hasn't been changed, do it soon.

as far as what would happen, i just think the cams wouldn't rotate...pistons wouldn't work...therefore engine wont run. other belts should be changed too...like the belts for the fans and stuff.

oh ya, it will **** your whole engine if that snaps. Very bad.

Owners manual said it should be done at 105K not between 60-90k. But 170k is definately high and warrants having it done.

I heard having it snap will require having the engine rebuilt. And ours is a belt rather than a chain so you won't be able to hear it when it's about to go.

170k kilometers/ should be around 110 miles ish

k well that sucks! i might ask for that for christmas! would anyone know where to look to see if it has been done before?

i just had it done, if your going to repace the timing belt you should do the water pump too, since it has a tendancy to leak

Maybe I'm just paranoid, living in Canada and all with the weather changing the way it does, but I had mine done at 100000 KMS's, which is pretty much the accepted mileage around here to have it done on ANY Honda product. I did the same on my Integra too. I'm at 171000 KM's not, and it's just about time for my SECOND timing belt replacement. I would much rather pay the $600 now as opposed to $7 or 8 g's when the engine blows up. I also drive my car very hard and it makes me feel good to know the belt isn't gonna slip or break. I am getting nervous NOW at 71k on my current belt!!

Yeah - but in canada, we can wait a little longer to get it changed b/c of the cold weather. You don't need to get it done until about 156,000km. That being said - Do it soon!

Its not just about miles/km's either. Its about the age of the belt. They dry up over a few years and when they do, they don't flex like they are supposed to and therefore snap. Think about it, look at those dried up pencil erasers, similar principle.

Sorry 'bout my post friends. I saw 170K on the original post and thought the K stood for 'thousand' instead of kilometers.

hehehe besides having ur engine seize up... it is not good to let ur timing belt go... it can actually break ur car to the point were it is not worth fixing.. for the V-6 forget it... for some reason 4 cyl can handle a broken belt and still get fixed.. i dunno about the 5-cyls tho

Zero Clearance engine on the 1st Gen TL's - which means if you don't change it and it does snap... either new engine is in order or a new car. Either way, very expensive!

I got my timing belt done about 3 months ago. Don't go to an Acura dealership cause they'll bull**** with you and make you pay an estimated cost of 900 bux. You can just go to a Honda dealership and get it done there for 300 less and get the same quality. A lot of places won't be able to do the timing belts on our Acura's due to we have a special bolt that needs a special wrench to take out. So might as well just go to a Honda dealership and get it done there.
Dude at Honda said change every 100k miles, but if you want to baby your Acura, then do it every 65k miles. Dude at Acura told me every 60k miles no matter what but he was just being an ass to me.
Also, it will f*ck up your engine if the belt snaps...friend HAD a honda civic 98, 121k miles on it, belt snapped, 6k worth of damages...

Here's my run down...
652.56 including tax

Timing belt changed
Water pump changed
All 3 Drive belts changed
Oil Change
AND A NICE CAR WASH AND A MINTY FRESH AIR FRESHENER!!!
