No, its not bad. It does shift rougher when you do this. Why? Because you are calling the shots, normally a 16-bit computer in the tranmission is planning ahead on when to shift based on various input (throttle, uphill/downhill, etc).

When you shift manually, you are telling the transmission.. "screw soft shifting, I want to shift NOW."

The only time its bad.... is when you are at a full stop, you keep it revving in neutral and then slam it into drive. Thats a big no no.

it also says in the manual book that we SHOULD step on the brakes whenever shifting gears or from park to neutral or neutral to d4 etc...

it also says in the manual that you can drive the car as a manual by shifting manually. Note - this 'forces' gears 1 and 2, but once in gear 3, then you're back to Auto shift, but with overdrive disabled.

I'd concur on this. I know a bunch of guys with 5th gen Maximas that have gone for 1/4 Mile runs at a local track who have fried their trannies. Luckily for them, their cars are still under warranty! They do some manouuver called "torque braking" for their launch whereby they rev up to ~2500 rpm while braking and launch from there.

Torque braking is much much more gentle though, they still have the tranny in drive when they are doing that. Its REALLY bad when its in neutral, they are revving and THEN slam it into drive. Why? Because most of the power goes to tearing up gears rather than going to the wheels.

FYI I had a mustang GT (manual) and my neighbor had a mustang GT (auto). He power shifted all the damn time and it killed his tranny. I always ragged out my manual and the worst that I got was a bad cylinoid in third gear. It may not matter with our TL's but sooner our later I am gonna have to pay out the ass for all the shifting I do from the light

well actually when u manually shift an auto tranny sometimes it doesn't shift right away cause the computer has to think about the optimal range to shift when it gets into that higher gear... if u are in redline position and then shift of course that is usually the optimal area the auto tranny wants to shift anyways... and isn't auto trannys made to save on gas that why they shift at their points depending on the pressure of the gas pedal... i know that if u are light on ur foot it will shift at 2500rpms, a little heavier 3500rpms, and fllored mine will redline every gear... but don't take my word for it and go gate shifting every gear all day every day... just do it when u need some pickup if u too lazy to stomp ur foot and rather just click down the shifter... but as long as ur are not neutral dropping... its BAD!!!

i brake stall every single time i race, which isnt often cuz i dont like loosing but thats besides the fact ive never heard of brake stalling messing up the tranny. Becasue the car is already in drive ur not grinding teeth on gears like u do when u start it in neutral
