what causes steering wheel to vibrate

what causes steering wheel to vibrate when I gently press on the brake. If I am slowing down from 75-80 miles to 15-20 miles, it vibrates significantly.

While I am cruising, it does not vibrate or shake, nor the car pulls to left or right.

I had it checked by two tire shops. One told me that I need front rotors and pads, other place told me that I just need alignment done.

most common cause would be warped rotors.

warped rotors, get them checked if you can get them machined or replace them.

Definitely warped rotors. My rear rotors are warped, the dealer said I can pay to replace them or just live with the shake, it isn't a safety or performance issue. I am living with the sahke, it doesn't other me enough to replace them.

Warped rotors are the most likely reason. If you were experiencing vibration during normal driving it would most likely either be mis/unbalanced tires or bent rims.

Now that I know it's the rotors, I need to figure if I can DIY or else.

Yeah, I think DIY is going to be a little too much for me right now, don't have all the tools to get axle nut off. I don't see spending time and money for this DYI which only needs to happen every 40/50k.

My plan is to buy the rotors and pads and have a shop do the work.

Ok, once i take the axle nut off, rotor comes off easily or I need to take off other stuff.

I was looking for a Steps for 2.5 but could not find one.

its not that hard of a job with the right tools.
-bleed brake lines
-remove axle nuts while car is on ground
- remove wheel
- remove control arm (its easier)
- remove all hardware holding rotor on
-press old rotors off and new ones on
(if you dont have a press take the whole arms to the shop and they can press them off/on)
- reassemble everything with new cotter pins, inspect work.

thats a general write-up for the front rotors, the rear rotors can be replaced in 10 minutes.

if you replace all pads make sure you have the tool to compress the rear calipers( its like a square with different teeth on each side, they catch the rear pistons cross pattern and screw them back in) - the rear pistons are a pain btw

good luck!!! let me know if you need anything else
