Tranny Problems ... 239k miles

Hi.

Before I did my tranny fluid drain/fill, my tranny was shifting hard. Now she's not wanting to shift out of first at all. I thought that this would go away, but it hasn't.

Is there a possible fix that doesn't involve a replacement/rebuild? Could I have done something wrong?

TLin401 01-18-2010 02:15 PM

Have you ever replaced the screen/filter?

Also did you ever change your differential fluid?

If those don't help then you are going to have to replace/rebuild the tranny.

Leuth 01-18-2010 03:53 PM

Replaced the filter, put in Z1.
Did not change the differential fluid... would the differential cause it to slip? o _ O

Make sure the filter is aligned properly. If it's a little off, it can cause it to hold a gear and/or leak. The diff wouldn't cause it to not shift, but changing the fluid would help performance and life anyway so you might as well do that. Fluid's cheap, too.

~Cheers~

^Ken had same problem.

Leuth 01-18-2010 04:10 PM

!!!! Jesus Christwagons. So I might have done the job wrong. Gravy.

I'll drain it and take it apart again once I've got more create-a-seal and more tranny fluid.

tmnhs81 01-18-2010 04:49 PM

You can reuse the one that is in transmission now. Assuming you recently put fresh fluid in.

Leuth 01-18-2010 05:03 PM

Yeah, less than 5k miles on the current filter.

Mandy 01-18-2010 06:15 PM

Sorry to hear...hope you get it resolved!

be careful to seat the filter correctly. My tranny was slipping because I used an aftermarket filter and it didn't fit 100%. I went back in and adjusted it and now it shifts smooth.

You can reuse the same fluid you just put in. Just have a clean pan to drain into and put it back in.

Let us know if it was the fitment of the filter.

True, as a precaution, use a clean cloth and filter the fluid and re-use it. Good luck and let us know.:wish:

As soon as I find the time and the place to do "the deed", I will let you know what's up. :3

oh man :what:. i just picked up my tranny screen and gasket today and was gonna tackle that tomorrow. i hope mine doesn't do that shit. mine shifts fine, i just wanted to change it since i'm sure its never been replaced in its 14 year existence.

TLin401 01-21-2010 08:32 PM

IMO if it doesn't shift bad doesn't fix it.

Just wait until he doesn't shift right. :2cents:

huh?

i don't plan to keep the car that long. i'd rather do it now and that way then next owner can relax knowing he bought a bad ass ride.

TLin401 01-21-2010 08:50 PM

True.

Replace the differential fluid while you are at it.

Leuth 01-22-2010 08:59 AM

What kind of differential fluid should I buy for this thing? I was thinking Lucas gear oil, but should I go with something else that's more recommended?

TLin401 01-22-2010 09:14 AM

Valvoline 80w-90

That is what I have used and also many others here on the forum.

Leuth 01-22-2010 05:59 PM

I don't trust valvoline. :p Would Lucas Gear Oil 80w-90 be good? How about Mobil-1? I use Mobil-1 10w-40 synthetic in my engine with a quart of Lucas stabilizer.

:reporter: "i'm glad to report that VIPSTAR successfully changed the tranny screen and gasket and the car is shifting like a Smooth Criminal"

i was a little worried that something might turn out :ugh:. it took me about 50 minutes to do the job. (ok ok. it took my friend about 50 minutes to do it) i wanted to do it but when i left walking to Autozone to pick up some brake cleaner and a scraper. he tackled it and had the whole thing off. all i did was scrape the old gasket off in some areas.

but that aside, my car shifts nice. the only thing i didn't do was change the diff fluid, and thats only bc the guys at autozone said that the tranny fluid was "da same thing for that car". i assume they know little if any about the car so i was hoping to see what other suggestions you guys give Leuth. then from there i can determine what i'll put in mine.

Leuth 01-22-2010 07:22 PM

I may tackle the job this weekend.
Probably tomorrow afternoon. I figure I'm going to go ahead and just buy a new filter, because I have the strangest damned feeling that I'm missing a rubber fitting. I remember seeing it, but I don't exactly remember seeing it ON the damned thing before I put it in... I guess I'll find out when I take it apart. But a new filter is only like $25 so big whoop, right? I'm going to go ahead and do a new drain/fill again and not use the old stuff.

Leuth 01-22-2010 07:43 PM

Also--How MUCH Differential fluid should I be getting?

Mandy 01-23-2010 02:36 PM

Get the big one, it will last you years. The are not expensive.

TLin401 01-23-2010 11:12 PM

You need about 1.3 bottles...so 2.
