Just bought a TL '98 with 103k miles. It is a very nice drive, but yhe check engine light went on yesterday, and the code is P0401 -- Insufficient EGR flow.

I read on this forum that there is an extended warranty of 97 TLs for this emission problem. Does it cover 98 too? Do I get a free tune-up at the dealership?

Also I smell some burning when pulling off highway or coming to a stop. Could this be related to the EGR thing?

From other posts, the 98 TL is not covered by extended warranty.

Burning smell is likely oil leakage, no relation to EGR problem. Look for oil tracks on surfaces.

EGR problem usually requires cleaning EGR passages. Use search to find posts on this for 3.2TL. My recollection is the intake manifold must be removed to clean EGR manifold.

Yup, all true. If you search a bit on problems thread, all there. I am a victim of the same. 98 is not part of the extended warranty, only 96 and 97.

I took the car to the dealership today, and they want over $400 for cleaning the EGR ports. Sounds a bit high.... I guess I will need to find some local shop.
