Theoretical Races

Hello everyone. I love Acuras and I own a '97 Pearl White 3.2 TL AT stock. I have recently found this forum and it seems VERY cool IMHO. I love everything about this forum.

The TL is my first car, well technically second, but to keep things short, it is the first I've driven as my own. Anyways, I was wondering how my car would fair against some of my friends. I doubt we would ever actually race even if I could technically win all of them So the line up is-
99 Passat 1.8 T AT
06 (possibly 07) Accord SE I-4 AT
98 (possibly 99) Maxima AT
All stock.

I know its pretty dumb, I'm just asking cuz I need the confidence

Oh yeah if you want to read about why my TL is technically my second car here is the story. I recieved my first car in 2003, it was an 89 Legend V6 LS. However, I didn't even have a license yet and so the car sat there. . . . . forever. I finally got my license in 2005 but by that time my cousin was selling her '97 TL and so my parents bought it off of her and let me drive that. So even though it is my second car, I never (not once) did I drive the Legend, its still sits there.

Anyways, I love my TL to death and TIA.

Well I found out that the Legend (based on the manual) seems to have more "advanced features" than my TL or at least the same as and it is 8 years older. Amazing. I think someday I might just fix everything up on it and drive that too.

Sorry, I can't find an edit button anywhere. And what I mean to say is sorry if this actually belongs in the Racing and Comp forum instead, but I figured 1st Gen riders will know best.

of those listed, don't look down upon the maxima. Those things can keep up with your 3.2. I don't condone street racing, I don't condone racing in our cars either..its not made to be fast..but if you must race then clean out your air filter (or buy a new one), get an oil change, race on an almost empty tank of gas, take out your spare tire, and use premium gas. those don't make much difference but it helps.

99 Passat 1.8 T AT - You.
06 (possibly 07) Accord SE I-4 AT - You but close.
98 (possibly 99) Maxima AT - Very close but it depends on the launch. They have a decent power-band in the VQ, but towards the top-end (from 4300K-up), it's a steep drop-off.

~Cheers~

P.S. Copy, don't read this thread. And Dudewithout, don't try these hypothetical situations on the street.

For a quick launch, start in D3 and floor it until about 3-4000 rpm, then shift to D4.

ps. I know it's probably not the best idea, but does anyone know if that's particularly bad for our cars?

Maxima might beat you, its lighter. The others you should beat.

Turn off your A/C and when you start off, have your foot on the gas pedal half way down and then push it to the floor a second later.

Good launch instructions! Anyhow, D3 might actually slow you down as I tried that before and I've found that the quickest is still D4, and the partial gas pedal. BTW, please turn off TCS if you've got it...

Why is that? I experience the same thing - nail the gas from a stop and the car "holds back" for a second till revs build, and then it "unrestrains" itself.

I know its not TCS because I've tried it with the TCS disabled.

Like you said, starting with partial throttle, and then rapidlly increasing to full throttle within a second leads to better acceleration accordint to my "butt" dyno. But curious to know why this is?

Basically its because of FWD and the weight shifting towards the rear. Its best to start off at part throttle for just a half second or so and THEN nail it. This is why RWD cars are kings at drag racing.

From what I googled,
-1999 Passat 1.8 (turbocharged)has 150HP @5,700 RPM,155 torque@ 4,600 RPM, it weighs 3187 pounds.
-2006-07 Accord (inline4 I-Vtec) has 166HP@5800 RPM,160 torque@ 4000 RPM, it weighs 3126 pounds.
-1995-99 Maxima(V6) has 190HP, 205 torque, weighs 3001 pounds.

The Passat is turbocharged, the Accord has a Vtec, and the Maximas got the VQ engine. I'd have faith on the Maxima because of its weight and the VQ specs.
The VQ is a rock solid engine, and different variances are being used
in the G35 sedan and coupe,350Z, Altima 3.5, and the upcoming Skyline.

You also have to factor in the fact that our suspension is noticably softer compared to the Accord, which is why I called it close. Not to mention he probably has a little less frictional losses thanks to being practically brand new compared to our cars. Now about the Maxima, I lost to a 98 Maxima 5-Speed by half a car after he removed his rear seats and carpeting, got a mandrel-bent Y-pipe to high-flow cat and cat-back exhaust, in addition to his intake and short-shifter. Half a car, that's it. All I had was an intake, plus loads of work stuff in the trunk... So that shows that there is a chance that our buddy here will win against the auto Maxima.

~Cheers~

Thanks, I did not plan on taking it to the street at all. Nope, I want to take care of my car. I purely meant hypothetically and I am not going to use these numbers against them (my friends), I just wanted to be even more proud of my car Thanks a lot guys
