rear end noise--cv joints in back?
We are hearing a rear end noise in our 3.2 when accelerating between about 15-25 mph or so. I don't notice when the car is slowing down through this same speed range. I have never 'heard' a bad CV joint, but it sounds like what I would guess a bad CV joint would sound like, "cyclic". The noise does not always occur. Has anyone ever been through this? Are there CV joints in the back? Maybe bearings... Your help is greatly appreciated!

No CV joints in the back. Those are exclusive to drive wheels that can be steered (i.e. front wheels on FWD or AWD only).
Bearing noise is a hum whose volume varies as you go around turns.
Any pulsing in the brake pedal / pulsing deceleration when braking? Maybe a warped disc rotor.
Maybe a chattering brake pad?

I pulled the tire off this afternoon and "spun" the brake rotor; no sounds at the highest I could spin it by hand. I don't think it is due to a warped rotor; it happens when we are accelerating, not when decelerating (including stopping). Thanks for the ideas!!

Had the rear rotors & pads replaced. Brakes are a LOT better now. Noise still there, though. I put trsnsmission into and out of gear while going down the street. Sound goes away when tranny in neutral. Of course, when I take it to mechanic it sounds PERFECT. I am really frustrated, because I just spent $3500 on a catastrophic failure this spring. If this costs me a lot, I won't be coming back to this forum much longer because my TL will be HISTORY. Ok. I feel better now. Will provide update when we figure out what's going on here.

Boy am I glad. Thought we had yet another transmission problem. When accelerating or gunning the engine with the car at a standstill with the brakes on, could hear the sound--coming from the front right side. Didn't drive it for two weeks because didn't have the time to take to a mechanic. Took it last Friday. Found that a heat shield was making contact when the engine moved under load, resulting in the noise. Put the heat shield in its proper place, after which no more noise!! I thought we were going to have to go back into the transmission....
