Is My Tranny On Its Last Days??
while driving back to NY from Massachusetts last nite....I notice the car is very noisy...i just assume its my muffler and planned to get it checked when I get back home.......halfway through my trip, the car exhaust starts smoking like crazy, blinding all the drivers behind me.....I start burning alot of gas.......I lose power, as rpms go up but my car is deccelerating....I pull over into a gas station, (now, my hood is smoking)....check my oil, there almost none left(I check it 2 days ago)...check the tranny fliud, its empty...the whole engine reeks of tranny fluid (that has to be the worst smell ever).....but the car doesn't over heat....I shift gears smoothly....i fill up the tank...put in sum oil and tranny fluid.....drive home...my car wont go over 45, no matter how hard i press the pedal...i finally get back to NY...my car is smokin again with that tranny fluid smell.....I'm thinkin a cracked gasket? or do I need a new tranny?....how much do they run for?....I got a 96' 2.5 with 103,000 miles

Does the engine sound really harsh if you just start it and let it idle?
I had a similar problem in the Volvo (I5 too) at ~175,000 miles. Was taking a highway trip and about 90 minutes into the trip I hit the toll booths in NH. I got out of the booth, and the engine wouldn't go above 4,000RPMS. Pulled over and it reeked, smokey, and there was virtually no oil in the engine. It stalled when I came to a stop, and wouldn't start back up at the time. I figure I blew out the rear main seal (hear similar stories from those who had) and bent at least one of the rods. I decided that it wasn't worth it to have it get fixed, so I parted out the car, and here I am with the TL.
