Lessons learned after 200,000 miles

Here is a list of all major maintenance performed in the first 200,000 miles:
· Replace oil & filter (every 4 – 5K miles)
· Replace tires every ~40K or as necessary
· Replace engine coolant (48K, 103K, 141K, 185K)
· Replace transmission bolt - vehicle recalled (60K)
· Replace battery (60K mile, 103K)
· Replace spark plugs (60K, 128K, 150K)
· Replace air filter (60K, 110K, 150K, 185K)
· Replace front differential (60K, 103K, 141K, 181K)
· Replace brake fluid (68K, 141K)
· Replace transmission fluid (103K, 180K)
· Replace front brake pads (115K, 193K)
· Replace rear brake pads (133K, 185k)
· Replace starter (103K)
· Replace front left wheel bearing (134K)
· Replace all belts - including timing (141K)
· Replace ignition system - recall P/N 06300-P5G-305 (150K)
· Replace muffler (158K)
· Replace front struts (164K)
· Replace all water hoses (185K) (after two failed with small leaks)
· Replace rear calipers (185K)
· Replace front calipers (193K)

What's next? Has anyone gone 250,000 with original alternator? radiator? transmission? A/C compressor? Other?

What problems should I be looking for?

Was the ignition system part of a recall?? Haven't heard of it.

Are you sure you still have the original radiator?....Keep an eye on the top seam...mine went at about 170K, didn't catch it in time and I needed a new head gasket....

I am sure the radiator is factory original. I'll start inspecting the top seam regularly. Did you have a massive failure or just a slow leak?

well am at 215,000 miles and i havent had a problem with my 96 TL 2.5. the only thing i had problems with is the exhaust manifold am replaceing that right now. my alternator hasnt bin changed... am goning to do a full tune up to the car when i get her of the lift. i'm change all of the fluids in the car that i can think of.

bigwerm187 what about spark plugs, wires, maybe seafoam it, check the belts

oo yeah i already bought that .lol.. yeah i got the whole thing anything u can think of am going to do when i get her back. my belts look like crap i got thoes already and the plugs and wires. am going to do a FULL ON TUNE UP.

Well I'm almost at 120,000 miles and my radiator is being replaced tomorrow. Its good to see that you are maintaining your car and have over 200,000 miles on it and it is still running strong. Congrats!

196,000 miles on the TL here. I've replaced the front axles and the starter. Thats it!

Bluish, you haven't replaced your water pump and you have over 200k on the odometer? You might want to do that soon just to be safe. Congrats on keeping your TL running so long! I do all the maintenance on schedule for my car, but am beginning to think I need to follow the severe schedule do to the very short commute I have now...

Mcflyguy24 - I replaced the water pump at 141K when the time belt was changed.

Best I can tell the radiator is most likely to fail next, so I'm thinking about replacing it before hand. I'll take my chances with the other parts (catalitic converter / exhaust system, alternator, transmision, bearings, suspension system, etc.). Wish me luck and look for my cry's for help when something unexpected happens!

How do you know when a radiator needs to be replaced? Sorry, I'm not very car savvy. I've had quite a bit of repairs on my TL.
