Ignition problem.. Suggestions?

Here's the problem. When I turn the key forward twice to the "II" position it doesn't seem to be engaging. The heater/ac lights stay off and the stereo won't come on. If I turn the key to start the car it starts up and immediately dies. However, if I hold the ignition forward after starting the car it will continue to run. If I wiggle the key around the AC wants to kick on...

I had to drive the car all the way home holding the key forward :banghead: Anyways, I'm about positive it's an ignition problem. Is this a common problem? How hard is the ignition to replace? How much is the part? ... Any tips or advice anyone can give will be greatly appreciated. I'll be tackling this tomorrow. :toothless

I had a starter replaced at 40k but the dealer did it for a onetime goodwill change because my miles were so low. I have a 97 3.2 but if they did not feel so generous it would have cost me like 800 bucks. If I were you I would have a mechanic look at it and see if he can get the part cheap because the can cost some change.

Thanks for the replies.

I called to get a new ignition and the dealer said it's usually the "ignition switch" that goes out, and not the entire ignition. I went ahead and bought the part for $52. It was pretty easy to put in, just took off the plastic part around the ignition and you can see the piece, took out the screws and wire and put the new one in. Took a total of maybe 20 minutes and the problem is solved.

Anyways, I'm glad it turned out to be pretty simple. Just figured I'd post this in case anyone else has a similar problem down the road.

later guys,
Sam
