I have a '98 3.2TL and I'm lucky to get 20-22mpg. How in the hell do you get 27mpg? Do you only drive on the highway at 45mph or something?

Well, I use 0w-20 Mobile 1 oil, keep the cruise on at 75 mph and keep the tires inflated at about 32 psi.

That's really amazing. I use Mobil 1 5W-30 and i barely break 22mpg or 300 miles per tank. Does using 0W-20 really give you a 5mpg increase? If so, I'm going to start using that on my next oil change! By the way, has anyone tried Royal Purple synthetic? A friend of mine uses the oil, tranny, and diff fluid in his Audi S4 and he says the results are quite amazing...too bad that stuff is so damn expensive!

Yeah, I only get about 20 - 22 mpg with mixed city/highway driving. I've tried a few things to see if it would improve - like a tune-up, better gas, slower driving... It still stays in that range.

I just did a Long Beach - Sacramento run over the holiday weekend (400 miles each way) and averaged about 29.5 mpg. In my normal commuting, I am getting about 24.5 - 25 mpg. I drive like a grandma most of the time, though -- trying to avoid speeding tickets.

There are some important factors in getting 25 mpg or so from what i've been able to tell. First off, the 0w-20 oil has helped a bit. I got it for free on my last oil change (long story). I have my tires inflated to 32 psi instead of 29. Gives it a bit firmer ride but its still quite acceptable. Also, altitude affects this. Less wind resistance. Tires/wheels themselves have an effect, some have better grip but at the expense of having more rolling resistance. Also heavier wheels can contribute to reduced mileage. My wheels are stock.

18-20 MPG in mixed driving is about right for a 3.2TL (unless you always jump on it). You should be able to get upto 29 MPG doing 65-75 mph on a LA to Vegas run.

I got 29mpg driving from Hot Springs, AR to Columbia, MO, but that was in light traffic in the dead of night, not driving too crazy.

Demon,
That seems low for a 2.5TL. You should be getting about 250-300 miles per tank and 18-24 mpg. Ease up on the lead foot.

I've got a '96 2.5 and get about 300-335 per tank. I've got stock everything, goodyear hps, and change the oil/rotate the tires every 3000-4000 miles.

I can't imagine getting 250 mi per tank unless you got rims or other mods that add weight.

Once when I drank beer and played my stereo really loud it seemed like my car got better gas mileage, but then again maybe thats just because I passed out in the driveway.

Question

My 98 TL 2.5 gets right at 20 mpg around town. I can squeeze out 25 - 26 mpg on the highway. I was hoping for better mileage. I run stock rims with stock size Kumho KH-11s and use Shell 92 Octane gas and 5w30 Valvoline oil. The car just turned over 60K miles and has always run perfectly. My Olds Silhouette minivan with a 3.4 V6 got about the same mileage... :-(

My gas mileage varies a lot from tank to tank depending on type of driving, weight in the car, A/C, etc. I average about 25 mpg.

Couple of weeks ago most of my tank went to driving around town with four friends in the car and the A/C blasting. I got about 21 mpg on that tank.

This past week I was cruising around primarily by myself on the hwy with no A/C and got 28.29 mpg.

I've gotten 29 before with on long hwy trips. I'll bet I could eek out 30-31 mpg if the conditions were right.

I think that generally one should be getting between 24-25 mpg during ordinary (mixed) driving.
