Failed Inspection, need help.

I went and got my car inspected today and it failed. The EGR systems failed, Cat. Converter, O2 sensors, and Evaporative system. I had the fault code pulled a while ago and it was one of the O2 sensors. I talked with a local mechanic here and he said that even if I get the new O2 sensor, I would still fail cause of the EGR.

My question is, does this sound right? And if so, anyone have an EGR valve for sale?

i think it is cheaper to just clean out ur EGR... if the EGR is messed up it will produce too much noxious gas... ur mechanic is right tho because i had this same problem.. kept changing the O2 sensor but with the source spewing out all that NOx... kill every sensor i put in there...

Remember what I said about federal law mandating that dealers fix your car for free to pass emissions?

Does your car have to still have its warrenty thing from the dealer... if it has to be under the 100,000 mile thing or even the 150,000 mile thing i'm way passed that... hopefully the TL's with a lot of miles can still do the "dealers fix your car for free to pass emissions" thing...

oh... lol @ :gheyfight: man-dating :gheyfight:

Last year my car showed a check engine light, pulled the code and got a o2 sensor failure reading. Took it to the inspection place and failed the same exact tests that you did, EGR, Evap, Cat. o2, etc. So a friend and i ripped out both o2 sensors and changed it out. The next day went to get it inspected again,... failed once again. Had a word with the mechanic, and he told me that since I had just installed the new o2's i will need to reset the ecu and let the car run on these new sensors for about a week before I should reinspect so that the ecu can relearn and back it self up prior to getting the fault code of a bad o2. Waited a week, took it back, passed.

Well, the car has 141,000 miles on it, so I don't think that it's covered. But umm, I might have the egr cleaned rather than replaced. I guess I'll have to see..

Its covered by the Clean Air act

Its federal law backed by the EPA... if you want, I can post a link to the law itself so you have something to back you up when you face the dealer.

if it actually says... "It is federal law that the dealer of the car has to fix it free due to emissions backed by the EPA" then post the link so that we can all print it out and go to the dealer...!!!

That law is EVIL... but in our favor... so, it sounds good... please post link!!!

We are lucky with our first gen TLs... We fall under a "emissions recall" from Acura.. This is not a law for all vehicles....

Mine doesn't fall under the recall. I have a '98, and the recall was for '96-97 models..

POINTS TO KEEP IN MIND
Unlike a safety recall, which has an eight-year statute of limitations, an exhaust emissions recall remains in effect for the life of the car. Therefore, this program has nothing to do with the five- year or 50,000-mile new car emissions control systems warranty. If a problem develops after this warranty expires, there is no obligation on the part of the manufacturer to fix it for free. On the other hand, if your car is recalled for an emissions condition, accompanied by an engine performance problem, it will be fixed free regardless of time elapsed.
so anything over 50k is on your tab.

UNLESS there was an emissions recall on the vehicle, which can NEVER expire.

Well, the O2 sensor on my 97 2.5TL failed, at 125,000 miles. It got replaced, for free, by the dealer.

Ken1997TL,

Do I understand you correctly that the dealer has to replace the O2 sensor if it fails? I 've had my 96TL2.5 since new and I never heard of the recall. I'm at 144k now.
