They all basically mean the same thing. 215 is the width of the tire as if you were looking behind it in mm. 4o is the percentage of that width and that lets you know the size of the side wall.
Basically the "height" of your tire from rim to tread will be 45% of 215mm. The 18 lets you know how big of a rim you can fit in there. For your example that would be 18 inch rim.
The Z denotes the speed rating. Rates the tire as being capable of of exceeding 149 miles per hour.
215/40/18 215/40/ZR18 and 215/40/R18 are all the exact same tire size with the exception that the "Z" is capable of higher speeds without ripping your tread off.
So basically a tire is read thusly (Width in mm 215)/("Height" 40% of 215)/(Rim size 18)
A 215/45/18 would be "thicker" than a 215/40/18 but the rim size and width are the same.
Be careful no to get too skinny of a tire because you could dent your wheels and it could be dangerous. I never skimp on tires, they are the only thing that keep you on the road. Literally lol.
Usually tires are just given in the generic 215/40/18 with other qualifiers added to it. Thats where the letters come in and they basically tell you the speed rating of the tire. V, W, Z etc.
Hope this is what you were looking for. Please correct me if I am wrong forum mates, lol.
