Criuse - '97 3.2 TL

When i bought my TL about a year ago the cruise was working but since then it's been hit and miss. At first it would engage and work but all of a sudden would shut off. I'd then hit the "set" button and sometimes it would engage again and other times it wouldn't.

I recently had my timing belt/water pump replaced and at the same time had the front rotors turned (at a non-dealer shop). When I got the car back the cruise seemed to be working fine again and I thought it was magically cured, but after a week or two it started acting up again and now won't work at all again.

Any thoughts on why it would have started to work after that work was done?

I've checked the brake pedal switch and that appears to be set properly.

I've been reading up in the service manual on how to check the cruise control unit itself but am apprehensive about having to deal with the SRS components/precautions. Is there anything specific that I should be concerned about?

Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Check the vacuum lines to the vacuum box by the radiator, maybe there's a hole in one of the lines. My CC is disconnected because I'm too lazy to T off a line to get it working again.

i'll check the vac. lines but would a vac. leak disengage the cruise like if it were shut off electronically (like the abrupt letting off the gas feeling you get when the cancel button is used to shut it off) or would a vac. leak gradually just not hold speed?

It's possible that the hole is only opening when you hit a bump, or something kinda pulls it open. If it were a big hole, your CC would just not work at all, even though the light on the dash says it is. Is the cruise light in the cluster on when you push the button?

~Cheers~

the light on the cruise button/switch comes on when it is depressed but the "cruise" light in the speedo only comes on when the cruise engages/works. Sometimes it will engage but most times it won't. When it does work most times it will only last for a few miles before it stops working.

I checked the vac lines and all looked Ok (didn't replace any) but that didn't help, the cruise still didn't work.

But......... may have stumbled across something else. My ignition switch was kinda stiff so I sprayed it with WD-40 and it loosened up and mysteriously my cruise started working............. flawlessly. Hmmmm...........?

Is there any correlation to the ignition switch and the cruise?
