Cracked Exhaust Manifold on 97 2.5

How many of you have expirienced a cracked exhaust manifold on the 2.5? I'm starting to expirience an under-hood leak. I have read about people having this replaced under warranty at the dealership. My question is, before I take it in, how can I tell wether or not its a crack in the manifold or just a leaking fitting? Where were you leaks at?? Thanks for the info!

Its covered by an extended federally-mandated emissions warranty. Get it checked at an Acura dealership, it'll be replaced for you.

Ken are you saying that acura foots the bill on this problem irrespective of mileage or extended warranties(which I did not purchase)...if so , can you give a citation to a document or regulation or Acura policy that stipulates that this is their financial responsibility...does it apply to certain years or models..or all...thank you

Its required on ALL cars up to 150,000 miles so that they pass emissions tests.

If you have any problems with Acura dealers on this issue, post their contact info and I will personally deal with them. They will listen!

Ken,

I've found my warranty booklet...under the section Federal Emissions Warranties...(Calif. warranties are stated separately)
" A list of the parts covered by this warranty is on pages 26-27. Several of the parts in the emissions control systems are covered for 8 years or 80,000 miles, which ever comes first."

Well, the Parts List identifies the Exhaust Manifold as having 7/70 California Coverage(which does not apply to me ) and it does not indicate elgibility for 8/80 federal coverage... Accordingly, according to this booklet anyway, I am limited to
4/50 manufacturers warranty coverage.

I'm going to inquire at the dealer today...if you can give me any info to hang my hat on it would certainly be appreciated...thanks so much, Doyle

http://www.alldata.com/TSB/01/97010925.html - That may be able to help you out a little bit. It doesn't say anything about the manifold, but you can get your ball joints replaced if they are broke, a safety recall. If I can find the reciept when they replaced my manifold I'll scan it for your.

Since you have a 97 2.5... what ken said is exactly right... you are covered under the emissions warrenty...

nice looking out ken for offering to talk to the service department for us...

In any case... the only 1st Gen that isn't covered is the 98 and yes my manifold is either cracked or the fitting is cracked... i need to fix that soon... heard it loosens the mortor due to the loss of pressure released...

98 2.5 same problem

Just got the bad news on my beloved 98 2.5TL -- Manifold is cracked along with the D Pipe. Now, the extended warranty only covered 96-97. Any word on what Acrua will do when I ask for coverage. It just doesn't seem right if the same design/issue was present on all first gens and us owners of 98s are out there with several thousand dollar invoices.

Thoughts??

There is a Recall for Lower Ball Joint Replacement on 1998 2.5 TLs. I bought mine around 8 months ago. Is there a way to find out whether the Lower Ball Joint on my car was replaced as a part of the Recall?

I had a similar problem with the rear bearings on my 3.2 Had one of them fixed then found out about the recall. Phoned Acura Canada gave them the vin, faxed them the bill and they re-imbursed me the full amount including tow. Then I had them both done again under the recall as they have to do both if they do them!

Thanks for the info Cornflake! Should I wait for the ball joint to go bad before I approach the dealership? Or is the dealership liable to replace the Ball joint in any case when there is a Recall on it?

EVen recalls do have a limit to time/mileage. Take it in, ask them about it and they will probably just do it.

98 Manifold - Rejected

OK, just got the word from Customer Service - no coverage offered. Ideas? I'm beside myself thinking about a $1,500 repair.

$1500 to fix a manifold!!??? Dude, find a used one from a scrapyard and have a smaller shop install it if you can't do it yourself..... That's WAYYYY too expensive.

Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines. The manifold itself from acura is almost $1,100. I have located a used one and am exploring having it welded. Oh such joy.

On my 97 TL, I was over the 150K limit and I search on the web(http://www.uneedapart.com/index.php), found few places that had used Exhust Manifolds, bought one. This place gave me a 90 day warranty also.
Whole thing costs me less than $500.00. ( $275.00 part and $225.00 labor).
If want this guys ph, send me an email.

Hey etsmith176,
Since you mentioned that the original manifold from Acura is almost $1100.00.... I was tempted to put this in. In the future if you're considering buying original Acura parts, do look at this site:
http://www.acuraoemparts.com/delray/jsp/home.jsp
I usually buy my stuff from them. Here the entire exhaust manifold assembly for your car is listed for $812.55, which is still about $200.00 saving after you pay for shipping.

Hey meazz1,
How long did it take to get the manifold replaced? I've recently moved to Birmingham, AL and don't really know any reliable mechanics around? Did this guy do a good job on your car?

Yes, he did an excellant job.
It took this guy almost the whole day, because he had to order gasket and some studs from the dealer. These parts from dealer cost was about $40.00.
car runs very good now.
Oh, when Acura told me that the mainfold was cracked, they wanted me to by a new 02 sensor also, but this local Mechanic reused the one I had in the car. He said it was in excellant condition.
My thing is, why spend $1300.00 on a new manifold in a 8 yr old car. Used one is just as good.
