Check Engine Light

Hey guys,

OK this is the first time I seen my "check engine light" come on. My car did feel like it "fluttered" for just a split second about 2 weeks ago.

Since then, my car seems to run fine, I hear no strange noises and the RPMs do not fluctuate or anything.

I am driving a 97 2.5 TL btw

Any 411 on this would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
H

The check engine light can be triggered from numerous reasons. Some of which that are common that has happened to me are bad oxygen sensors and faulty EGR valve. I suggest you bring it to autozone or somewhere that can pull the codes for that check engine light for free so that you will know what is triggering it. Hope its not anything bad.

What kind of climate do you live in? Something weather related could also set off one of the sensors to get an incorrect reading. You need to scan your computer to see what code comes on.

Have you tried resetting the ECU because mine came on one time and I reset the ECU and he hasn't come back since.

I live in Hawaii. Tropical climate...

Just how do I "scan my computer"?

Thanks in advance,

As I've noted above, easiest way is to bring it to an autoshop or autozone that provide free check engine light diagnose. They will plug their OBD scanning device to the plug in your car and retrieve the code(s). For the 2.5, the plug is under your ashtry. Not sure about 3.2.

Another option would be to disconnect your battery for a few minutes and let the computer reset itself. If light comes back on after connnecting and starting your car, you have a problem. If it doesn't then it was probably an incorrect reading of something at the moment.

The reason I ask about the climate is because mine does that sometimes when it's very moist.

The connector to the ECU is behind the ashtray BTW.

I tried going to "Checkers" but they said they dont do free diagnostic testing anymore. They only offer battery, starter, and ...something else, I forget what they said.

I will try and disconnect the battery later on today and hopefully the engine check light wont come on anymore.

I did "re-charge" my K&N drop in air filter about 2 weeks back. I followed the directions to a tee, then just dropped her back in.

About 1 week later, was when the car engine "fluttered"; it felt like it was gonig to die out on me, but didnt.

A couple of days later after that, the engine check light came on and has been on ever since.

But so far, so good, my car seems to be running smoothly still!

Will post back later on battery results.

P.S. Yeah it has been raining a lot where I live in Hawaii~
