Air filter size

I want to replace my air filter box with a cone filter without the intake pipe. does this sound like a good idea or not? I am just wondering if it is going to do anything or if i am just being stupid. I read that the stock pipe being rubber will shrink when air goes through it too fast...does this mean i will have less air than i do now or just not as much as a solid pipe? also...what size filter should i get and how should i mount it on the pipe?

thanks,
will

My brother did this same thing. Just take off your current air box, measure how big the diameter is on the intake tube, I think its 3 inches. Then go here http://www.knfilters.com/universal/univrndtap.htm

Look for the one you need. Dont get one too long, make sure it fits. Get the model number and order it from a car parts store.
