'96 TL 3.2 starter replacement procedure/DIY/howto?

First post here-hello!

My mother's '96 Acura TL 3.2's starter decided to bite the dust the other day after driving thru some relatively deep standing water. It has the one loud 'click' syndrome when starting that is explained in one of the stickied threads above.

I am no stranger to working on cars, as I have been doing work on mine and my friends BMW's over the past few years-about the only thing I have not done is rebuild an engine. I understand that the driver's side drive axle must be removed for the starter replacement, and that is not a big deal-but I am wondering if there is a write-up somewhere I can read that will help me know beforehand any 'gotchas' or shortcuts that could be taken. If anyone knows of any special tools that might be needed for this job that would be welcome information also.

I have to get the TL repaired so we can get it out of the garage and put it up forsale before her new replacement comes next week-an '07 BMW 525i. Thanks for the information!

There is a post with the Service Manual on the boards somewhere. Do a search and you can download it.

~Cheers~

P.S. Why the 525i? I personally think that if you're going to go for a 5-Series, do it with at least a 530xi for the current generation... Or save money and get more power from a 335i. .

Thank you for the service manual tip-I will see if I can find it.

Normally I would completely agree with you-however, my mother is 74 years old and power is the least of her concerns! Yes, for the price she could have easily purchased a new 335i, but her main priorities are ride comfort, interior comfort, and room. The 525i is perfect for her needs.

Now me on the other hand-well, at some point a 335i may very well be in my future. One of my primary complaints with BMW is that they stopped putting limited slip differentials in their car lineup a few years back-except of course the M series-and that really takes some of the enjoyment out of the car-especially when it has a lot of power. As soon as the E90/92 M3 is released, E46 M3's will further drop in value-and that might be an option also.

WOW. I retract my staement about power! Hehe, she definitely doesn't need it, hehe. I know what you mean about higher-powered cars being only one-legged, hehe.
