But I think you need to go through a lot of trouble to install subs.

6x9s are nice, but they won't do everything. I have a sub on my stock headunit and i don't mess with the bass and treble settings. I wanted a non-distorted sound which is why i chose to add a sub. I also wanted to hear ALL the notes. When and if you get a sub, you'll hear notes you never knew were there.
But back to this thread. Yes, you can add sub(s) without changing your headunit. You can either use a line converter that splices into your left and right channels and converts them to RCA outputs. Or they can use the amp wiring and splice them into the rear left and right channels to get sound inputs to the amp.

i have an amp for sale that i used in my TL. it is a subwoofer only amp that hooks up to the factory radio. its a kenwood that outperforms my old soundstream amp. it had the best of both worlds the great sound of the factory system with some bass kick. i have some subs for sale as well. kenwood bandpass box that really booms.
i also have some pioneer 350watt 6x9's that are amazing.
