I am getting terrible gas mileage in my 96 2.5 TL, i changed the plugs, new fuel filter, and replaced the air filter with a K&N drop in stock replacement filter, I am not sure what else I can do. im getting prob around 11-15mpg, on average about 250 miles to a full tank of gas. maybe its because im coming from a civic to this, but my manual says i should be getting 18-20 city/highway. if anyone has any input please let me know. or am I just over reacting. what kind of mileages are the rest of you getting? let me know.

 

There have been numerous threads about mileage. Please do a search. Aside from that, fat people? Too much stuff in the trunk? A heavy right foot?

Man, you are lucky to get 250 miles from one tank. I barely get that, and my fat friend went on vacation for a half a year so that means that these are unbiased results. To tell the truth I think that this is normal gas millage for this car. I've no idea how others manage to get more, unless they do only highway driving in ideal conditions.

 

true dat^ i havent put gas in my car for 2 weeks already hahha dont put ur heater on. that will make it save gas too, half tank right now is 113 miles, i get shit gas!

Are you actually running the gas until your car dies or until the light turns on? If I remember correctly the gas light turns on at 14 gallons on the TL. so 250/14 = 17.86mpg which seems about right.

 

good point, i never really thought of it like that. I guess its cause Im used to payin 25 to fill up and getting 300+ miles out of it!! SOHC Civics,lol

tell me about it, I got it from the orig. owner, a 75 year old man. had all dealer papers, even the window sticker. lol paid a good price for it though... 5k but its clean as hell, I will get some pics and post em . thanks to everyone for there input about my problems well not so much problems anymore.

the only thing that i regret about getting the 2.5 is its not 5 lug!!! there are numerous sets of newer TL rims with tires on craigslist in my town for under 200.00. anyways I cant stand the stock rims that I have but I just cant afford to buy new after market ones. any sugestions? by the way, I think your car is sick. Is it USDM?? I cant really tell from the pics.

 

5 k dam nice , i got myne for the same price, but 210 k with a cracked rear bumper + 1 jammed caliper etc... lol and its a 97. try to find out if the previous owner used 91+ octain cose my owner for sure he used 87 or w/e thats why i have so many probs.

 

he def. used 91. he also always had it serviced at the local acura dealership. i think I got real lucky with this find. i almost got a black one from some crummy used car lot for 3,800, but it was sketchy, and he seemed to want it gone to bad, I talked him down from 5200. it had water inside and the seatbelts were dirty, (how the heck does that happen?) torn speaker covers and other misc. interior problems. does anyone else have a leaky trunk? or leaky taillights? cause I sure do...

 

Thank you for the kind words. Mine has a USDM interior... Haha. It's originally a USDM car, but with a JDM body and a USDM heart. I'm in Japan right now and I wish I had brought my car. I don't want to have to build another one, although it'd probably be faster than my USDM one just because of how many miles I have on that tranny and chassis (247,000 miles), and cost me less. Gas is about $6 a gallon here, though.

Leaky taillights are from the gasket between the lamp and the car body. Over time it gets brittle and starts to let water in. I siliconed the area when I had my Inspires in, but after the accident, only the right side is siliconed. For some odd reason, that's also the side that has now started to leak... I need to re-glue it soon. I'm also missing my front left speaker cloth, but I can get some new cloth for really cheap so I don't care. The car you mentioned above probably was in a flood, so the only stuff I'd re-use on that car would be the body panels. None of the electronic stuff will last long.

not to mention the sales man was quite greesy lol, anyways i was patient and waited it out and found my lovely TL that I have now... and WOW 6.00/gal thats steep!! and here I am B*tchin about gas mileage when I pay around 3.08 for premium. so just take out my lights and dry them out, and then re-seal them to the car?? makes sense. I just wasnt sure if it was a problem with the light housing itself or if maybe it was coming in from somewhere else. also, I think my trunk is getting water in it from the under carage. have you encountered this problem before? thanks again for all your help

 

The trunk water and the little pool in the spare tire well is all from those gaskets. Now, having water IN the lights is from the seal on the light housing itself. There's a drain plug in the spare tire well, so just drain it from there. Be sure to spray some Lysol on the truck carpeting otherwise mold'll grow.

I think my old TL has a little over 145-150k now. When I bought it (back in 03), it had 90k and then when I stopped driving it it had like 100k. It comes out of the bodyshop next week with a fresh black paint. My sister is out of town, so I get to drive it instead of my gas guzzling sc300 until she comes back.

 

You think your SC300 is bad, if my friend's brother wasn't drunk and crashed the SC400 I loaned him for the weekend, I'd still be driving that thing, haha. It got 12MPG on a good day, 160,000 miles without a tuneup!

I almost got a SC400, they were going for les then my TL, I just didnt want to deal with the incline in insurance rates. heck my insurance went up 10 bucks a month when I swapped from my old 97 civic ex.. and as for the water deal in the trunk, that makes sense cause it seemed to be coming in from under the carpet liner or something but now that I look at it everything thats wet is lined up with the tail lights on each side..

160k miles without a tune up might be the reason you got 12 mpg. My SC is slowly getting better and I'm adjusting to the car, but I miss my accord(the one in my avatar).

I'm waiting for the TL to come home, so I can do a tune up and clean the interior. I need to find a chrome 3.2grill and emblems to replace the ugly peeling gold. I remember I joined this site to ask how to remove the rear plate garnish (to paint over the gold) back in 2003, but to this day I still don't know how to take it off.

 

I had been planning to do stuff to the car (read: maintenance) but I was too busy with the TL and fixing the damn air compressor in the Range Rover. It ended up totaled and I lost the $650 JDM HID kit and any chance to make some money back for the body parts (it was a '97 with black interior).
