Finally, I got my muffler installed! (magnaflow 12148) I have two words to describe this muffler:brutally lound! I don't know if this muffler required a break in period or not just hope it quite down a bit. At idle when the engine at operate temp. it was quite.
I'll post pictures later on.

Hate to break it to ya but it will only get louder. Had I joined this forum when you first started this thread I would have tried to sway you against purchasing it.

Does anybody know if the 96-98 RL has a resonator for the muffler? I've looked in the manual and it said nothing about resonator. The reason I ask is because I want to install a 22" resonator to it, hoping it will quite down a bit. Anyway, I really like the sound of this muffler but my dad said it too loud.

It has a small resonator before the muffler sextion just before the rear tire.

You can probably add a small 12"after the cat.

I say get a different muffler and sell the one you got.

Yes, I think I'll get a a bigger magnaflow muffler, the 24" body length one. From What I've heard is that a bigger and longer muffler will be quiter than a shorter muffler. The one I currently installed on my car is a 14" and I love the sound of it. The only problem is that my dad keep complaining about it lol

Does anyone recommend this muffler in terms of loudness? I'm not too worried of it being too loud.

Ok, after installed two different Magnaflow mufflers to my car, I could think of two words, loud and drone lol. Seriously, the way the exhaust and cat designed for this car was pretty bad. The cat takes a lots of space in the piping alone. If the cat is shorter then you can add 20-24" of resonator to quite down the tone.
Loudness 9 out of 10, however at highway speed it sounds amazing! I'm planning to get the Apexi WS2 or the HKS hipower. I think you want an aftermarket muffler that have the same length as the OEM muffler so it not going to be loud.

Nice lol, I replaced the OEM cat and put in a Magnaflow cat just for the hell of it haha. Sooo very indecisive on what kind of muffler I want though.. and for 9 out of 10 for loudness, you're referring to the Magnaflow 12148?

Yes, lol. Do your state require you to get you car inspected? Like Smog test or some thing like that, if not then you can get Magnaflow high flow Cat and try to add a 20" resonator in there and then you are golden! You must have at least a 20'' resonator or 24" to help keep the tone down.
Here are the list if exhausts that you might want to look at:
Stromung and Remus both from Legend, they sound good!
Apexi WS2
HKS Hi power
5Zigen Fireball Mega from Lexus GS<<I want this so freaking bad!

Any of the above exhausts will be better than Magnaflow

It was loud so i didnt bother to record it. Have you tried to remove the muffler and just weld a straight pipe with a 3.5" muffler tip. I actually thinking about that, when I saw a clip on YouTube. It sounds really good! Maybe add a 24" resonator where the stock muffler is and weld a tip to the resonator. I'll try that when my car pass the inspection lol. But I'm a little concern about the back pressure if the muffler is removed. Search "Ka9 VIP" on YouTube and they have some clips of the exhaust.

I think back pressure would be a slight problem and definitely a project to do after you pass inspection haha, I feel like that wouldn't pass..but I'm curious as well. I ordered the the magnaflow lol...I'm just too curious on how it sounds and I cant really find a video on it. I know you said it's loud but If I dont like it, it's a good thing i can return it!

Wait, what you ordered the Magnaflow?! Like the one I had, you are going to remove after a month or so lol. How can you return if is open? If you have a chance, can you get a Magnaflow that around 30" long because the old Mag. I had was around 20". Short muffler= loud, so I just curious if the bigger muffler is going to be loud or not. Thx.

Lol, now I think that is a good investment. Scratching my head off just try to figure out the right muffler for the RL. They also have Bosal (spelling?)stock replacement, which I might get and add dual 3.5" tip on there.

There is a return policy on it, whether opened or not just as long its in one piece. Wouldn't a large diameter of a muffler produce more sound..? and this Magnaflow only comes in 20" but i feel the bigger the muffler, the louder it is? I didn't have an option on what size I wanted

Once you installed/ welded, then you can't return it. Yeah, I what thinking the same, the small one is loud already wouldn't the bigger one sound even louder. But after I did a few research lol, they said the bigger or longer muffler actually quiter or its tone out the sound because the sound wave has to travel farther. Do you get it, cuz I'm still a little confuse lol. Bottom line, try to get a 30" Mag. Muffler and try it. I can give you my Mag. for free. I had a 3" dual tips on it, it looks hella dope but its too loud

Hmm, more space for more sound to travel around? how I see it haha. If your really trying to give away your Magna for free then I'll take yours to off your hands . Better than me buying one seeing as you're willing to give me yours lol

From what I've researched, longer mufflers are quieter only because the "padding" in them are more vast than in a smaller muffler so therefore sound is absorbed more..but create a deeper, "louder" tone? Thats what I found..hmm

The tone is absolutely beast, I actually like the sound of it. I have to take people out and they complaint about it. If you are don't take people often and you don't mind the drone then I think it is really good. Yes, the muffler for you is free but you have to pay for the shipping lol

OUCH! LOL that why I hate living on campus. My university parking is really tight, so I have to park on top of the roof Anyway, I think you should get the 30" Mag. I want you to experience the sound level and report back to me so I can decide to get that or not lol. I'll ship you my Mag. for free so you can try to sell that to make up the cost hahaa...

Ok, but here is what I'm planning to get.
Magnaflow 28'' polished #14576. And this one is 30", #14250, but the out let is on the side not center so I think it going to hit the bumper.
4" Magnaflow resonator tip #35173, I try to make it looks like the 5zigen fire ball mega lol.

Yea, I'm still debating should I stick with dual tip or going large single tip like the 5Zigen. With the large single tip, you can add a silencer if the muffler is too loud. What muffler did you get? Make sure to post pic/video lol

I got the Magnaflow #12148. Im still waiting to get it installed, instead of bolting it on I may weld it on seeing as that bolt that holds the muffler together seems a tad rusted..lol for this muffler, did you have to buy any piping or you just bought the muffler and slapped it right on?

Wait, isn't this the one I had lol. Anyway, yea the bolts were much rusted, they had to cut the pipe and added a extension pipe. I don't know, you should ask them to clamp instead of welding it because if it is too loud you can easily remove it. I wonder how long it going to take you to change your mind

Haha I had already bought it before you told me not too :P but I'm doing this all myself maybe friday but will deff be on by saturday if everything goes well..Im really lazy and dont want to measure the piping that is apart of the stock muffler but I'm going to cut from there hoping its 2.25" then extend it with the same size piping because the magnaflow is 14" and doesnt reach that far back. I'll be clamping instead of welding. You make a good point, if I dont like it I can easily replace it Hopefully that piping that is thats apart of the stock muffler is 2.25" cause if it is, my job will be a lot easier lol.

I'm going to make a Before/After clip and pictures as well

Are you going to install yourselves? I believe the stock piping is 2.25" I might be wrong tho. Good luck lol

The muffler style on that Magnaflow looks clean if done right, but i still don't think an aftermarket muffler on these cars is needed. I'd be fine throwing on clean exhaust tips and calling it a day.

but that's just me.

I could see it if the 3.5RL had a Type S version with a manual and sporty to drive, but these are not... so quiet and clean is the route I'd go, personally.

All Done! Personally, I'd grade myself with a C- of doing this job lmao...It was horrible, but I guess it worked out. I actually really like the tone and the drone is a bit much but I think I'll deal :P I clamped my exhaust tips to the muffler as you can kinda see but when I have time im going to weld them. As for the rattling you kinda hear in the video, thats because Its not on a muffler hanger but it is now! Ill take a better video when I do the finishing touches to it. Not really satisfied on how it is right now but I do love the sound haha Taking a before vid wasn't even worth it...it sounded like regular stock and I'm sure you all know how it sounds.

Heres the vid:
