Just got new rims for my 99 RL. What's the best tire size I should look into?

Hey guys my new rims just came in from Ebay. They are the 2007-2008 tl styles. I haven't ordered tires yet as I won't have the money for a bit but does anyone have a tire size they would recommend? I want to keep the ratio close to the originals so the speedometer isn't too far off.

Here's a photo of them:

Im running 225/50/17 on my TL five spoke wheels, the tires arent too fat nor are they too thin and as for ride comfort and even treadwear they are good- Pirelli P6 Four Seasons

If you have an Acura Navigation System make sure to go into the secret menu to change your tire size so the car knows to compensate for the larger or smaller size when calculating speed.

I actually decided on going with the 235/45/17's as well. I kinda forget about this thread so I never remembered to check back.

I'm going with Goodyear Eagle GT's V rated. I can get all 4 mounted/balanced with full front end alignment for 635.

I would also love to hear more about this secret menu as I do have the 99 Nav.

Press "Menu" "Setup" and "Enter" (In that order I think) and you're there! Just be careful not to screw anything up!

I don't think this applies to the first gen of nav for the RL. I had no luck entering such a menu, and from all the info on the web I think it's for the DVD based versions only.

Does anyone know of any ways of getting into the PCMCIA nav units?

apparently in the settings menu, mentioned above... If you screw something up... there is also a chance that the Acura will either transform into a Decepticon or a... Gumball Machine.

Like MyNameIsEarl said, make sure you don't screw anything up.

I actually checked last time I got in my car, it's "Menu" "Map/Guide" and then "Enter". Hopefully this is the right combination, I know exactly which buttons to press, I'm just having a hard time remembering what is printed on the buttons. It's the top right one, middle right one, top let one, in that order.

Ok so either I am just having no luck entering this menu. Here's a photo of the buttons I'm pressing:

(Sorry for resolution my phone is cheap)

Could you make a video or photo of what buttons your hitting?

And the gumball thing doesn't sound too bad. I do enjoy me some gum.

I used one of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/280647987365...84.m1439.l2649 (T5 SMD LED)

It took them about two weeks to get it to my house but it was a good deal for 10. I only needed one but it's nice to have spares haha.

Wait why would the car need the tire size to calculate speed? I thought the GPS does that.....0.0

Still no I feel pretty stupid. Can I do it from any menu? And is it all three at once or in sequence.

You press it in order of top right, middle right, top left, and hold them all as you press them. The car needs the tire size because it only updates via gps about every 6 seconds or so. Between those 6 seconds, it uses physics and how fast the car thinks the vehicle is going. It uses rotations of the wheel per unit time, which if altered from the original radius, skews the calculations. Because 2*pi*r1 is different than 2*pi*r2

Worked like a charm! My hazards went on for a few blinks then the green menu popped up. I saw the tire size and everything. I get my new rims tomorrow around 2 so I'll make sure to update the setting once I have them on the car.

Thanks for the advice! I'll post photos in here tomorrow.

I think they look great and my center caps will be in next week. Only issue I have is with a large amount of weight in the back they don't have much clearance from the fender. On a good bump I would probably rub. Should I worry about this?

I'm curious as to why your rear end is sitting so much lower than the front. I'd be concerned, just because wheel were never designed to rub against the wheel housing. It also depends how how far up they go, it they just barely touch the black plasticy-rubber stuff, then you're probably okay, any more and I would do something to correct the situation.

I will keep an eye on it. I think with 2 people in the backseat it may become an issue, but on daily drives there isn't any concern. The shocks are most likely the stock ones from 14 years ago so they probably aren't exactly fresh.

Also my tires and rims weren't the only change I made today:

Nice looking headlights, although the picture kind of washes it out. Are those Audi style lights? Try speeding up your shutter speed on the camera and you should get a better picture.

And I don't know what someone could do with your license plate number, but you may want to blank it out... Seems like just about everyone on this forum does that.

Looking good! I wouldn't worry about rubbing too much unless your planning on having some "portly" people sitting in back. I have 18's and they are a little closer to the fender then yours are, and I've been able to carry 3 normal people and some luggage in the trunk and have had no issues. However, each cars' suspension is a little different, so although I would keep tabs on it, I wouldn't worry too much in your situation

Thanks for the recommendation. The leds are more of a solid bar look, the ones I bought seem to have a bit of purple tint to them. Also the photo was taken with an Iphone 4, which is the best camera we have haha.

I did run into some issues yesterday with the rear wheels rubbing during turns or bumps. 3 people total, had to drive very soft and took turns slowly but still caused some here and there. My dads very mechanical inclined and said he would help me roll out my rear fenders just a little bit to stop the rubbing.

I keep changing the subject but I don't want to start a new topic for this last question of mine. Every always discusses the intake resonator removal, but I've never seen a how to or even just a photo of it. Does anyone know of either?

Hmm, weird. Maybe my suspension is a little stiffer, has to be. Ive had 3 people in the back with luggage and no rubbing at all. Oh well, glad to see you can roll em and not have to worry about it anymore.

As rar as rear rubbing, look towards the rear bumper area where it meets the quarter panel. There is a flat tab that the rear bumper bolts to. That is usually where it rubs the most.

as far as resonator removel, just undo the fender liner, stick your hads in there and unbolt.
I think its 3 bolts

I would caution very strong against rolling the wheel well fenders out. Paint on metal has a habit of splitting when the metal under it is bents. Unless you are willing to paint the whole fender after rolling it out, it isn't worth the trouble.

Best of luck!

Older thread I know, But I just changed out my wheels on my 04 and cant seem to locate any "secret Menu". mysteriously, my VSA light comes on and off intermittently and after turning it off then on a few times while driving it finally goes off or after i park and restart. Somehow today, my passenger airbag light is on and when starting up it says its off. I will have to consult the manual once again this weekend. Fogs wont come on, fuse check is in order. Speedometer secret menu thing, I have no idea if its accurate or not. I just filled up with gas and will wait the 3 days to see if the engine light goes off if not its off to get it plugged in to see if my exhaust sensors are bad.

As far as Rolling fenders, I've seen it done with a heat gun, a cheap wooden (wood only) baseball bat and a floor jack where the heat gun heats everything so its all flexible but not burnt or dried out flaking off with the rolling as you jack the car and add more "angle", takes about 30 mins per fender, if you know what you are doing and work as fast as the heat gun will allow without damaging anything, esp, the paint.

Cheers!
