Gas Mileage...

To start off, I'm aware that the first-gen RLs are known to have poor fuel mileage. However, I just feel like mine might have a problem as this doesn't seem all that normal to me.

Currently, I have a little less than 1/4 of a tank left and I've driven 146 miles on that tank. Keep in mind this is with very granny-style driving. No heavy-footed driving whatsoever. This is with less than 10 miles of freeway driving around 70 MPH or less and also no stop and go city driving. Does this sound normal to anyone?

Depends on your average speed. I've gotten as little as 195 miles on a tank. As much as 360.

Mine too, I recently noticed my RL getting really bad MPG. I only managed to get only 90miles for half tank, I have K&N CAI and Magnaflow muffler. I try to go back to the OEM intake and muffler and install new spark plugs. I ordered OEM NGK spark plugs and I just wondering do i need to gap the spark plugs? Thx

I need to calculate it, haven't done so in a while but I'm sure we are getting about 300 miles out of a tank.

50/50 driving, I average about 18mpg or 300 miles; 90 highway/10 city, i get about 22-23mpg or 370 miles. It's a giant gas guzzler considering its weight and power ratio. Most V8s do better than this....

18.9 MPG, freeway + city combined. 119016-118824

I traveled 192 miles and had about 1/3 a tank left. A few canyon runs, freeway pulls, and 75mph cruising.

Thats true for highway driving. The RL needs a taller 4th gear or a 5th gear. A Legend 6 speed manual would result in high 20's on the freeway.

A RL is like an older Mercedes. It's all about style, comfort and looks. Forget about the gas mileage.

Except the RL doesn't ride around like there's 4 dead bodies in the trunk

A lighter taller rim/tire combo and lighter brake rotors could probably get you a couple of mpgs.

Light rims are expensive and so are lighter 2 piece rotors

My brothers 2002 Accord V6 (200hp / 195 tq) gives about the same mileage as the RL (225hp / 235tq). So, I feel it is OK for what it is (for the time period it was designed in). I buy gas at Costco or Freddies which brings premium prices very close to regular outside, so maybe that is one way to split the diff. Also, if it is paid off, and you were itching for a newer/more efficient car, you would have to consider car payments and insurance hike.

I couldn't have said it better!!!!

Remember the "age group" this model was intended for didn't care about gas mileage (55+++) and who had lots of dough......Big mistake Acura did with the 05 introduction because most if not all went back to LEXUS, BMW and MB....

2000 RL with 100,000+ 90% highway at mostly 65mph or less from FL to CA, 24mph. I'm in the SOCAL region now and have to maintain 70+ or get ran over on the freeways. Fuel economy is running around 20mpg with 80% freeway driving mostly over 70mph.

According the owner's manual the RL has an 18 gallon fuel tank. I reset a trip odometer every time I fill the tank. I Know that I can go 360 Miles at 20 mpg, my current average. I really don't pay that much attention to the fuel gauge as there is a goodly amount of fuel left in the tank when it reads 1/4. 7 gallons plus or minus. Run your fuel gauge down to 1/4 and see what it takes to fill it. Then you'll know with some degree of confidence what you have available at the 1/4 reading.

Normally i get about 20 mpg average. Very rarely i have gotten more but it's rare. This past weekend i had to drive 550 miles to NC and i got anywhere between 22-24.5 doing 70-85 mph all highway. I was really surprised with this but it was a bonus. I bent a rim on the tsx or we would have taken that b/c of the better mileage.

I have a heavy foot too. There was one car the entire 1200 miles that passed me, that should tell you how fast i was going. I ran 550 miles in 7 hours 15 minutes with one short stop for gas and one full stop for gas and to order food.

I recently did a round trip to CT from MD (350 miles one-way) and averaged 27mpg at 60-70mph (384 miles at fillup, 14.1gallons). Around town I usually do 22mpg, or 20-21mpg with a roof rack on (50/50 highway/city), and I'm pretty light on the accelerator. just cleaned my intake manifold; gunk had closed my EGR port from a 1/2" passage down to 1/8" so we'll see what I get now. hoping for 25+mpg average. 218,000 miles.

Impressive! I just did a tune up on my car. I replaced the spark plugs with the OEM NGK, valve cover gasket, spark plugs tube seals, and a new air filter. Surprisingly the MPG is still the same, on the low side 16-18MPG I did mostly short trip so that might be the problem. Anyway my EGR code is on and I just bought the EGR pipe hopefully i'll replace it soon.
