Damper Lockup.

Just making sure you guys are aware of this problem with old dampers on our RL's.

I found this thread on H-T.

The .pdf file for the article is in my second post in this topic.

I posted a topic in this forum a few weeks ago about an Acura RL that my shop simply did an oil and filter change on, and only thereafter the car rode like absolute trash. Turns out the front shocks locked up and in my efforts to find answers (sadly not a SINGLE reply from this forum) I was provided with an article from Honda's publication for its dealerships' service departments, Service News.

I'll quote the article:

So basically it translates like this:

If you own a 96-04 3.5RL and have it serviced at any shop that has a lift that picks the vehicle up by the frame (and allows the wheels to hang down) there is a chance that your front dampers/shocks can quite literally come apart internally. When this happens there is no sound, no leakage, etc. to alert anyone.

If you work at a repair shop it means you might want to print this bulletin/article up and show any of your 96-04 3.5RL customer before doing any work to the vehicle that requires the use of a lift. Alternatively you could also use a lift that picks the vehicle up by its wheels such as most alignment racks. This is what I'm going to try to do from now on. It's crazy that we have to tiptoe around a faulty part in order to try and not look like the bad guy.

That's good information to know. However, most work being done on older vehicles (brake jobs, suspension repairs, strut replacement, rotating or replacing tires) requires the car be raised on a frame lift. :-(

Wow I can't believe this. We took our 2004 RL to the dealership to get its oil changed. They lifted it and when we got it back, it rode like absolute trash.

We told them it was their fault, that something must have happened and they flat denied it. Said they would look at the problem but would charge us a $200 diagnostic fee.

Too bad it happened a year ago. But at least now I know what's wrong with the car.
