crank cylinder position sensor & antifreeze
I own a 1997 Acura RL with 187k on it. I bought with 19K in 2000 & it has treated me well. Last week I noticed melted plastic on the floor of my garage & discovered that it was coming from my crank position sensor which apparently was breaking down.I was due for a timing belt & water pump change anyway so I'm replacing the sensor. Has anyone experienced a crank sensor failure & know why? Also I was curious if the new aftermarket antifreeze is compatible with the honda cooling system?

From an RL owner on another forum: "i pulled the left upper timing cover on my 97rl and saw the same thing down at the bottom of the timing cavity and thought oh crap, i have a bad oil leak. but after closer inspection, it did not look like oil. it looked as exactly as you guys are describing it (mine has not made it to the ground yet). behind the left cam pulley is a sensor, (forgot the name of it, maybe crank position sensor?) but anyway it is a black plastic module that houses that sensor and i talked to the service guys at the dealer about it and they said all of them do that and not to worry about it. they said they use to change them out but do not anymore. they said even after the melting has occured, the sensor still works fine. so i am going to leave mine alone.
my suggestion would be to clean up the black spots and keep on driving."
I have a 2000 RL and also have melted pieces of this cover on my garage floor for the past 3 years and my car runs fine. As you can see some dealers don't even replace the covers when they replace the sensor.
