Build thread for 2nd gen Legend K sport coilovers on a 1st gen RL...

Well I got them in finally the other day and figured I'd surprise everyone with this... and since it seems that many have some questions for it... here we go.

Obviously, first and foremost, jack the car up...
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...arendbegin.jpg

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...nstertruck.jpg

Get into the back of the car and remove the speakers to get to the upper strut nuts, (3) 12mm nuts on each one...
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...suspension.jpg

Then remove the 17mm bolt out of the bottom of the strut at the rear hub. Remove strut...
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...rwheelwell.jpg

Go to the front and remove the 17mm bolt out of the fork at the front LCA. Also remove the 14mm bolt that attaches the top of the fork to the strut itself. NOTE: You will need to get LEGEND forks to replace the RL forks, they bolt right up and install perfectly.
RL on the left and Legend on the right...
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...ckRL/forks.jpg

Unbolt the nuts at the upper strut tower, (3) 12mm nuts on each side again. Also remove the (2) 10mm bolts on each side to remove the upper tie bar along with the (2) 10mm bolts at the "firewall"
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...kRL/tiebar.jpg

As for the A/C line, just push up on the line to have the small clamps let go of the hose and remove bar from the engine bay...
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...L/notiebar.jpg

Go get your new K Sports...
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...ControlPro.jpg

Adjust to the settings that you prefer... NOTE: I set mine at 15 in the rear and 10 in the front... I plan to lower it slightly more in the front though
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4.../installed.jpg

I'm sure everyone on her knows how to reinstall the suspension back into place. No pics needed of this process.

Now, since rocking a LUXOboat without the upper support tie bar wasn't an option, I decided to take the extra steps to do it all. In order to do this since the top hats don't come pre-drilled for the support tie bar, you'll have to drill the holes yourself.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...ppertower2.jpg

Finish drilling the holes... I used a 5/16" carbide drill bit and it took me less than 10 mins to drill out all 4 holes.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...uppertower.jpg

Bolt the tie bar back in and adjust your damping settings...
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...ckRL/Knobs.jpg

Reinstall your engine cover...
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4.../enginebay.jpg

End result...
I was at stock suspension, with the TL wheels...

Holy sh1t that's low!

Nice write up!

99blackhatch Mar 15, 2010 05:40 PM

And It can go lower... I'm waiting for the coils to settle.

3.5RLv-tec? Mar 15, 2010 08:47 PM

99blackhatch that is sick bro. I want to lower my RL too! Where did you get the k sport from and how much? So i basically need the Ksport from the Legend (year?) and the front fork right? Wait don't you need a camber kit to go with it?

OLD_HATCH Mar 15, 2010 09:40 PM

91-95 Legend and if you want to go that low then yes camber kit is a must. Well unless your running sime low offset wide rims and want to run like 3 degrees of negative camber for them to clear the fenders.

99blackhatch Mar 15, 2010 09:45 PM

OLD_HATCH is correct. I'm not running a camber kit currently, and i like how the ride is so far.

I wanted to build a "VIP" style car and I'm starting to learn more and more all the time.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4...RL/awesome.jpg

Looks whole different car. Just love the looks of it now. Good job sir..

Take the front mud flaps off or speed bumps will do it for you..

99blackhatch Mar 16, 2010 07:30 AM

I know what you mean... I went out last night and removed the mud flaps all around and then also cut the inner fenders back to where they still are above the tire, but removed the front half to prevent majority or the rocks and shit from getting back into the car / door area.

2 less things to hear the tire drag on

3.5RLv-tec? Mar 17, 2010 02:25 PM

So how is the ride, bouncy lol? Does it really hard to go over speed bump or getting out of your drive way, since your car is really low:tongue: BTW you need to red out that amber on your taillight man. I have pic of my taillight if you want to see them.:toocool:

99blackhatch Mar 17, 2010 11:06 PM

It's rides great. I'm liking it a lot so far and it doesn't scrap hardly at all. Leaving my driveway and speed bumps are fine.

JAX_RL_3.5 Mar 19, 2010 10:09 AM

Thats really low! Correct me if I am wrong but dont KA9's have problems with the front axles if lowered too far? You need camber like woah! Looks good though. Thanks for the write up.

OLD_HATCH Mar 19, 2010 11:12 AM

I think the only thing is that they get slightly off bablanced and you get a slight vibration. usually only under hard accel.

99blackhatch Mar 20, 2010 01:35 PM

Hard acceleration is a little vibration, but not much, but i normally drive slow.

Are you serious! damn thats suck because i take my RL to the track a lots. Can this be fix?

99blackhatch Mar 24, 2010 07:31 AM

...I'm sure it can with getting a camber kit and an alignment.

Are you serious? I love my RL but it has no business being on a track of any kind.

OLD_HATCH Mar 24, 2010 02:47 PM

I wouldnt say that. I would like to take the RL on a spirited road coarse. :D

Where do you race your RL though. 1/4 mile wouldnt be any fun.

Take some of those hard ksports throw in some poly sway bar bushings and some good tires and a road coarse wouldnt be a bad idea.

thaillest30 Mar 27, 2010 09:39 AM

Quick question: It was said before that the TSX coilover suspension would work on my RL, If this is so would there be any adjustments such as with the forks like with legend coilover system needed?
thanks fellas

3.5RLv-tec? Mar 27, 2010 04:57 PM

For TSX coilover, I don't think you need the Legend fork.
Lol my race track is short and is near the airport:tongue: Only two sharp turns and its all straight! BTW I only race at night because I have BI-Xenon:thumbsup:

OLD_HATCH Mar 27, 2010 05:35 PM

TSX coilovers don't need it. Only Legend coilovers do.

bixenons huh. Got pics?

3.5RLv-tec? Mar 28, 2010 03:53 PM

Yes sir, just retrofited my RL headlight with FX-R projector plus clear lens with 4300K HID, it looks nice. I need to figure how to activate the bixenon lol. I'll post picture soon.

99blackhatch Apr 1, 2010 07:26 AM

Well, the car has been great. I've been considering selling my project Civic track hatch in order to just drive this and finish getting my own place.

I'd miss my hatch, but I love the RL soooooooo much now.

pmendoza502 Sep 17, 2012 05:54 PM

would using the oem top hats been an option on the ksport coils?

pmendoza502 Oct 15, 2012 05:08 PM

@99blackhatch -

what kind of bolt did you use to mount the strut tower bar?

pmendoza502 Nov 8, 2012 08:39 PM

TTT! need to find the answer to my question really soon!!!

99blackhatch Jan 21, 2013 03:02 PM

Wow, been a while since i've been on here and i just went to a hardware store and got nuts, bolts, and washers that fit snug and never had a problem after that. Also, saying that it's been a while, the black car has been sold and picked up the replacement. Being that low caused problems in the long run after not having a camber kit on it... New steering rack was needed, replaced the axles as well over time (Autozone lifetime warranty axles), and scraped a hole in the "Y" pipe for the exhaust. the replacement RL is slightly higher and has no problems since the 2nd day I've swapped all the suspension and wheels over. I know, didn't take long to swap parts on a new car. LOL https://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c...h/IMAG0520.jpg 2004 Carbon Gray Metallic Premium 3.5RL https://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c...h/IMAG0530.jpg I'm suspension shopping as well too... i might have another build thread coming soon for something new i hope.

I really like the new one that you got

99blackhatch Jan 31, 2013 06:15 PM

thank you sir. :)

3.5RLv-tec? Jul 9, 2014 12:40 PM

Hi, I'm revising this old thread lol. How long was the shipping for the ksport? It looks like the coilover is made to order. I'm planning to get the same coilover too, but don't want to lower that much. How many inches did you dropped on the 04? Thx.

3.5RLv-tec? Aug 13, 2014 12:32 AM

Finally, I got my Ksport! Why there is no click indication for the damper setting? How do you know what level you are on?

konserone Feb 8, 2015 10:25 PM

:thumbsup:nice! thanks for the post

3.5RLv-tec? Feb 9, 2015 09:09 PM

I'll repeat this one last time lol Don't get the Ksport for daily driving. It is very stiff! This coil over is intended for track use only. You need to look into BC or Tein for DD.

diyautoftw Jul 28, 2016 05:19 AM

Love the way it sits :toocool:

Since i was not able to edit my original post from several years ago and Photobucket decided to be a bunch of assholes and charge money to post photos... I had to fix this thread the best i could. :)
