Weird Turbo Knock/Noise

I'm getting a strange "tckkh" sound when the turbo dumps.

It doesn't happen every time, but it's happened twice in about 6 or 7 tries.

I'm usually in first or second, drop it into S if it's not already, bring it up to 6kish rpms and release. Upon release is when I hear the "tckkh" sound. Rather then the normal "whooosh", it's a "tckkh-whooosh."

It might be a coincidence, but this started after the intercooler install. So I'm thinking it's either the front mount that I wasn't able to tighten, the BOV making a noise since it's mashed up against the TMIC now, or something with the turbo?

I haven't installed my intercooler yet. I am starting to get a little worried about minor problems down the road.

#1 There is nothing wrong with your intercooler.
#2 The sounds you are hearing are becuase the intercooler is a solid piece of metal, unlike the stock intercooler which is half plastic.

#3 Having run the ETS TMIC without issue for a good 20K I can say without a doubt that it is absolutely fabulous.

Louder valve train noise is normal. The only thing you might check is the seal on the BOV, this required a sealant in my case. Otherwise, if the car is still drivng like normal, you are O.K.

I should have mentioned that I've noticed my turbo make odd noises before the install, but they weren't this loud. I get a weird whistle/whine when it's cold, and when I release after a big acceleration it makes... i don't know less of a tckk sound? It sort of sounds like a normal release, but echo'd. It's so damn hard to replicate the sound in words, but I will have to take a video or swing by the dealership and show them the sound.

I'm assuming it's the BOV since that is what is being actuated when the turbo releases.

I didn't mean to post this accusing the TMIC, it just happens to be the last part I added. Don't be worried mrgold35, I agree with Mr. Marco and don't believe it has anything to do with the intercooler. It's impossible for the TMIC to cause the noise because it's a static part, it just sits there while air passes through. Unless my thought of the front mount causing the noise, but it's so tight I doubt it's causing the sound. I do believe Mr. Marco when he says that it's probably enhancing the noise since it's a solid piece of metal.

I did use Ultra Grey between the BOV and TMIC and used the maximum recommendation - something like 1/8"-1/4" thick.

It seems to drive fine and the only reason it bothers me is because it does happen regularly and one time it stopped acceling and just shifted after making the noise. It's never done that since though.

Oh yeah - cannot be replicated when in park or neutral. I tested about 5-6 times and the turbo release sounded perfectly normal.

Got the front mount finished on the tmic and the noise went away. I have a feeling it was tapping something at extreme conditions. Still have a weird turbo whistle when cold but no crazy knock.

What do you mean? Did you mount it up front?

When I installed the TMIC the 2 rear mounts lined up perfect, the front mount was off by about 1/2". I never did anything with the front mount, I just left it loose until I saw what the others in the group buy came up with. I didn't want to drill it until someone else had the same problem, when they did I added it to the list of things to do this past weekend.

I was wrong about the front mount, it's obviously there for a reason. It feels "tight" without a front mount when the motor is off or at idle but when the engine starts, or runs under heavy load the motor shifts, just like any motor does. I'm sure that the noise came from when the motor shifted under load and the front mount of the TMIC touched or something.

Bottom line, the TMIC still moved around and caused the noise because my front mount wasn't installed.

The sound you're describing is the air pulsating and coming back through the turbo. This happens even when the BOV is functioning normally. Anytime you add volume between the turbo and throttle body you'll get more noise due to a larger volume of air trapped between a closed throttle plate and the turbo.

The turbo making a whine or siren like noise when cold is journal bearing noise assuming these are not DBB turbos. They get louder as the bearings wear. You can try a really good 0w-30 oil like Redline that will have a higher viscosity index while not using VIIs and retaining a high HTHS for great engine and turbo protection.
