Is the turbo in a RDX bound to have to be fixed?
Hey all,
I am looking into vehicles for a future vehicle, that would be like the Honda Pilot and Honda CR-V, and the MDX, but would be an Acura and would have a 4CYL engine. I like only paying $30 per gas tank.
First off, I am wondering if the turbo in the RDX is either known or not known to have issues down the road, because we all know that turbos are not the best thing for a vehicle in terms of reliability.
Also, what do you guys pay for every gas tank on average?, and how many km's or miles can you guys go on a full tank?. Thanks in advance!. I heard the newest RDX has a V6 and I think seats 8 now, but I definetely dislike paying $60 to fill a gas tank, thats just me, so I'm sticking to the older models.

First, most of the questions you ask ^ have already been answered here. Second, the RDX would not be a good choice for you.

Check the various threads on mileage that already exist - and such a question indicates that the RDX is probably not for you.

The 1G RDX was marketed to 30 something DINK's with a need for speed. Just the fact you'd consider a Pilot or CR-V rules out any enjoyment you'd get from the RDX. Depending on how you drive...nevermind...the mpg's in the RDX are awful no matter how you drive. If you are looking strickly at Honda, the CR-V is a great practical chioce. If you are looking for a LUX, the Lexus RX is a really nice little ride. Otherwise, you'd be kicking yourself at the pump every week with the RDX>Sorry, it's just not for you.

I think it comes down to 2 things:
1) Saving money should be more important compared to only saving gas.
2) Do you view a vehicle as an appliance to just get you from A to B OR do your view a vehicle as an extension of you and it supports your lifestyle the best.
I average only about 20 mpg combined on my RDX compared to about 27 mpg combined on my TSX (I also put between 12,000-15,000 miles per year on both cars). I've gone on more driving vacations in the RDX in CA, NV, AZ, and CO in the last 2 years compared to having my TSX for +6 years because the RDX supports my lifestyle better. I can bring more stuff and stay longer on vacations compared to having to fly or be cramped in our TSX in the past. I also purchased a roof cargo carrier if I need extra space when traveling 2-3 times a year. I also love the small size, turbo power, luxury/tech, handling/sh-awd and unique styling you would not get with the other choices. I don't mind spending $50 per week because I am saving in other areas in our family budget.
If saving gas is top on the list, then I would go for the CR-V.

I'd recommend going to Honda.com and doing a little research on models and specs. The RDX is supposed to be a 5 passenger vehicle max! not 8.
If your looking on spending around $30 on gas I would buy a honda civic or a hybrid of some sort. Also if your worried about the turbo going out then do not buy a car with one, more parts means more maintenance.

Well I guess I may just have to go with a V6, a SUV is what I want and I need lots of space. Fuel efficiency, well it comes at a price, I'd be better off with a SUV Hybrid made by a different manufacturer, but I will never switch away from Acura/Honda. Toyota has an except down the road, maybe.
You can say I am limiting myself, but the reliability stands out by far IMO.
A vehicle is a part of my lifestyle for sure, it's not just about getting from point A to point B.
I guess a 2.4L 4CYL would be a little more expensive to fill up than a regular Honda civic. I had an RSX before and it was around $30, which I loved to death.
Thanks for all the tips though, this is what I wanted to know for sure.

I had a 93 N/A Supra, which I drove till it needed major repairs. I didn’t have the cash to restore it so I sold it, took the cash and bought a CR-V. Great car, but it’s like a toaster… Nothing interesting about it, but it’s useful, reliable as hell and unfortunately SSSSSSLLLOOOOW. I TOTALLY gave up when getting behind the wheel in that car. After I was rear ended and the car was totaled, I wanted something as useful as the CR-V, but offered more. I feel that my RDX is the perfect compromise. Looks great, comfortable, versatile and pretty damn quick to boot. Yeah I’m forkin over 50+ at the pump for premium, but I have a big smile on my face when I walk up to it, sit in it and step on the gas. I usually judge a purchase by how much regret I have after buying something. There is none of that here. As a matter of fact my plan is to keep my 07 for a few years and trade up to the last year that offers the turbo which I think is the 2012. I do not care for the 2013 as much. Doesn’t have as much attitude, (at least on the outside). As far as gas I get 17/23. A 2WD CR-V gets 26, but if you got the 4WD it averaged 19. The CR-V would go about 250 miles on a fillup, (I think it had a 14 gallon tank) while the RDX could get 300+ as long as you kept your foot out of it, buy why would you? Like I said, no regrets whatsoever.

Safety Car
For example: I have 2 sports coupes with about the same power, weight and interior space. They both get about 28 mpg on 91 octane, but the VW has a 13 gallon tank and the Mitsubishi has an 18 gallon tank.
Looking only at fill-up cost would lead to a false assumption that the Mitsu is less fuel efficient than the VW, when in fact, they are the same.

Might be referring to the weekly fill.
For example,
I fill the car up on the way home from work at the end of the week and it generally sits in the garage over the weekend.
If I've been driving around running from points A-C I pay $40. If I've been a good boy and didn't hit that edge-of-town strip club on the way home, then I'm closer to $30 a week.
