New Owner Of Acura RDX 09 Needs Advice

Hi Acurazine members! I just purchased this week an 09 RDX with 91, 262 miles. It has a great Carfax maintenance report on it with 28 records and I am the 3rd owner. Dealer almost got me to purchase an extended warranty for $3,559 for 24 months or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first. I find this very pricey and refused. Dealer lowered it to $2000 for basic engine/transmission. From reading about the reliability/long life of this vehicle on this forum and other sites, what are the odds of my rdx's engine/transmission failing in 24 months. I would like piece of mind, but 24 months is not long and I feel like I would be wasting my $. I am taking the vehicle on Saturday to get inspected and maintenance check. Acurazine members what would you do if you were in my shoes?

Welcome to the forums.

Since this is a technical issue and not a "New Member Introduction" I moved this thread to the appropriate subsection so you can hopefully get more help.

Welcome to the family!

Only Acura Care extended warranties are even worth considering. I've skipped Acura Care for my TSX and RDX and it paid off because most of my issues happened after it would have expired. I did Acura Care for my MDX for 5 extra years or 120,000 miles because of the magnetic shocks because they can cost $700-$1000 per corner to replace. Acura offered an extended warranty up to 100,000 miles last year to cover the magnetic suspension. My $2400 Acura car warranty is only good the 20,000 miles; which, is only about 1 year of driving for me. I used the extended warranty twice to replace the front seat heaters on two separate occasions (just need $2000 worth of stuff to fail to break even in the next 18 months).

I've purchased my 08 RDX used in 2010 with 30,000 miles. I now have 140,000 miles of a strong running engine, turbo, transmission, transfer case, and sh-awd rear diff. I even added Hondata, ETS intercooler, Honda heatshield gasket, and K/N drop in air filter and the engine/5AT/sh-awd still runs like new with the extra power. Having regular maint done is the key for longevity. The only issue I had was an i-vtec solenoid that needed to be replaced for free under the 6/70,000 mile powertrain warranty (not very common failure). The powertrain is very solid for the turbo RDX in any year.

The more common issues to look for the RDX are:
- alternator
- A/C compressor/clutch (Acura has an 100,000 miles extended warranty for this)
- leaky power steering rack and/or pump
- rear camber being out of spec
- door or trunk lock/unlock actuators
- sun visors won't stay in place
- torn center arm rest
- blown speakers
- Navi DVD reader going out
- static with XM stations (more of an XM issue than Acura)
- condensation in the headlights
- weak OEM battery or corroded battery cable
- rear hatch won't stay up
- A/C mix door groaning at start-up under dash (TSB to re-grease the connection)

There is a big 100,000 mile service due soon for about $800-$1200 (depending on the dealership). It could include things like new spark plugs, serpentine belt with idler, valve adjustment, anti-freeze flush, etc... That might be the main reason someone traded in the 09 RDX just shy of that service? If the service was already done, it would mean a pretty big savings on top of the selling price (mostly just engine oil changes and tire rotations for 30K after that).
