My initial guess would be the fuel sending unit. Take it back to the dealer and have them fix it. That does suck with 40 miles on it, but things happen.

Anyone know if the fuel gauge needle position affects the result of the 'range' readout on the MID?

No, it shouldn't. I believe the range is calculated based of the MPG you are getting as well as the miles already driven on the tank so it will vary according to that. Say you filled it all the way up and the gauge only reads 1/4 tank the MID should show a range of 280 or more (based on MPG).

Fixed

I found out the problem!
Well I live in Jamaica and as a result the vehicle had to be shipped. One of the criteriors for shipping is that they only allow a quarter tank of gas in the car, so to prep for shipping the mechanics at the dealer pushed some type of hose down into the tank via the filler neck to pump out the excess fuel.
The RDX has a semi devided tank and incorporates a siphoning system that transfers fuel from one side (passenger) to the other side where the fuel pump is located.
When the sales guy told me what was done, I immediately thought that by pushing the hose down into the tank, they messed up the float mechanism which might result in the screwy guage readings.
When I open up the tank ( driver side in question ) and inspect the fuel pump float assembly I cant find anything visually wrong I hook up the system electrically and manually move the float to the filled position and the guage still only goes to the quarter position So then I say that the problem must be with the other float (sub-assembly) in the other side (passenger) of the tank
Upon opening the passenger side of the tank and pointing the flashlight inside for inspection I immediatley see the problem Apparently what happened was that when the trusty techs pushed the hose into the tank in snagged the hose for the siphoning system (mentioned earlier) and pulled it over the float thus holding it in the empty position. This caused the overall incorrect fuel level reading. Unsnag the float and a quick system check and the needle moved to the full position, problem sovled
