Re:Auto Day Night Mirror

I thought I saw a few days back someone post why it was not on the RDX. From what I understand in Canada it was on them initially, but they now ship out without it. It's now a $490-ish option.

Acura considered the tinting to negate the value of having an auto dimming mirror.

I paid $293.60 for the Auto Dim Mirror with Compass installed from Goodson Acura in Irving Texas on 11/13/06.

(I bought several accessories that day so I did get a discount)

Yes, tinting came with the RDX saved me money for tinting the car and buying the auto dim mirror

The combination of tinting and the car being higher in the air really negates the need for a dimming mirror.

I don't know about any other areas other than my own little world, but the RDX isn't near as high as most of the vehicles in my area. Lots of big SUVs here as well as mid size like explorers and xterras and stuff like that. With the low ground clearance of the RDX, all those headlights are up high, but its not only those headlights that bother me. it's just as much the headlights from cars. In many cases the SUV headlights are better, because they are mounted up high, the beam is aimed at a slightly lower angle. the lower the car, the higher the angle which can appear brighter in your mirror. before I got the autodimming mirror installed, I was using the manual flip up switch all the time. It's nice to not have to touch it at all anymore.

There are probably some that don't like the autodim mirror so it makes sense to me that it is an option....

I just got mine yesterday and installed it today. It's really easy. I took some pics and was going to do a DIY post if anyone is interested.

in hindsight, i should've saved the $220 and not had the auto dimming rearview mirror included in my RDX package. the rear tint does a good enough job to reduce headlight glare.

I don't disagree with you, but how do you know that if you've always had the auto mirror?

Guys, the Subaru auto-dim mirror is identical to the one in the RDX, and has a street price around $135:

http://www.subaru-parts.com/catalog/...f65928990cac79

The only thing I wonder about is if the harness is the same, but it may not matter a whole lot -- it's simple two wires going in -- +12V and ground. Everything else about the mirrors seems to be identical. I am tempted to get the Subaru one and put it in my RDX, especially since I have a bunch of Subaru coupons and it wouldn't cost me anything.

As long as the window mount is the same you should be good. there are a few fit and finish pieces with the acura one that make it all pretty, but I don't think you'd even notice if you didn't have them. And your right for the wiring. I doubt the plugs match, but you certainly could wire it very easily...

Go through the install instructions for the acura mirror to see the things I mentioned...

I previously compared the install instructions for Acura and Subaru, and the parts look identical -- right down to the little plastic covers that hide the wiring. The window mounts are both the universal type used by most cars. I think it might work!

It is fairly unusual for this segment and I am not too convinced of the reasoning posted on this thread as to why Acura did not standard equip(v) the RDX with an auto day/night mirror.

As for some buyers not liking this type of mirror, that may be true. However, it can be "turned off" by the operator at will. (I hate cruise control but it can be deactivated and hence, it does not bother me that it is a feature in my Maxima/Murano/Quest.)

Sidenote: On our 05 Murano both the auto dim mirror and dark tint were standard equipment.

That said, I am probably more suprised that it is not a feature at least included with the tech package.

If they load up with every conceivable feature in the first year, there wouldn't be anything to tack on as a freshening at the mid model update. And the RDX already has almost everything else you could put in a car... and then some.

It's fairly obvious that power passenger seat, driver seat memory, and possibly the auto dimming mirror will show up in 2009 or 10, assuming that the RDX makes it that long. At current sales figures, that isn't a lock.

well therein lies the problem: you assume that the only RDX i've ever driven is my own.

i've had an RDX as a loaner when i took mine in for an oil change and a brake check. had it over night. didnt have an auto dimming mirror.

light glare off the rear view was negligable compared to the auto dimming mirror. hence, the conclusion i came to about the auto dimming mirror.

any other questions?

I agree with your assessment. I have yet to flick the standard mirror to the dim view. Just not necessary and easier to identify a police cruiser coming up on you than with mirror dimmed. Wouldn't complain if auto dimming was standard but no biggee to me in this vehicle.

Point take. , auto D/N mirrors and passenger side power seats should be a given for an upscale brand....assuming said brand can be considered legitimately upscale.

Well, I've had enough luxury type cars / vehicles (not bragging) & this is the first that didn't have an auto dimming mirror! Many had tinted back glass, (like the '03 MDX) & it still had the Auto dim mirror!
Well, I got mine for Christmas & installed it, (very easy!) & love it. It also looks cool & has a compass reading in the mirror. Good for us non-tech owners. It should be included in a vehicle this nice. You can turn off the auto dimming, so if you didn't like it, you don't have to use it!
