Ran a 2004 330i SMG

A good friend of mine drives a 2004 BMW 330i, six speed SMG with Dinan intake, Dinan catback, Dinan ECU upgrade. Gorgeous car to say the least.

Yesterday I ended up following him on the highway. I phone him on his cell and tell him at the next light to give 'er see how bad he beats me. Unfortunately there was a truck in the right hand lane, so the 330 was in front of the RDX. Just before the light turns green I brake torqued to 2,000 RPM and when it was time to go the RDX took off so hard I almost rear-ended him! I actually had to let off the throttle for a second. Back on the gas, into second I wasn't pulling on him, but he wasn't pulling on the RDX. Into third gear same scenario. Towards the end he pulled about a quarter of a car length. I was shifting a tick before redline. Wonder if I should have shifted a bit sooner to avoid boost tapering off like it does.

*There was no traffic around, no traffic violations or speedlimits exceeded. Do not street race.*

We were both impressed, but I think this experience has made him want to trade the 330i in for a 335 turbo.

Rearending your buddy's 330i would not be a good thing!

I'm surprised that the 330i would not be able to pull away more significantly... hmmm, I know the SMG is kind of a dog, but it can't be that bad.

Maybe try it out at a local track for safety and actual slip times?? I'd be interested at the results as the magazine times for this car is all over the place?? Oh, before people start jumping on you for brake torquing... yes, it puts more stress on your trans, but not much worse than clutch dropping at 3-4K rpms in a manual car (done in moderation of course).

Jim

Oh yeah... 335i would destroy the RDX! But, we can haul more stuff! Now the upcoming 335i Touring is yummy...

Is 2000RPM the best for break touring? OR would higher RPMs be any better for the turbo to spool up, before the waste gate open or the BOV doesent open?
