New member – questions on antifreeze/coolant and airflow (intake)

Hi everyone,

I was doing oil change (thanks for the DIY) and noticed my RDX already have low antifreeze/coolant in the reserve tank at only 5000 miles. Does anyone have this issue (not sure if it’s a real issue since it’s a turbo engine)? Anyways, I’m going to check with a dealer to see if they sell OEM antifreeze/coolant.

Another concern is that the RDX engine bay gets really hot during summer days. I have a bmw 325 (V6 3.0) and thought that their engines are hot, but not so much compare to the RDX. I looked around to see where the airflow comes in and only notice a tiny opening inside the front grills. There’s a tube that runs to the intake and has another opening that runs air to the engine bay. I’m not an expert but the design of the airflow looks to be very minimal. Has anyone done any DIY to have better airflow (maybe some kind of air scoops) or have a good aftermarket intake system? Maybe I’m being too paranoid, I mean after all it’s a SUV and not a race car…lol

I have not open up the intake box yet but does anyone know if the intake has a separate charcoal/carbon filter inside along with the air filter?

Any comments/input is much appreciated.

Thanks!

quite possibly does your low coolant have something to do with not properly cooling the engine and/or an issue under the hood as to why you are running so hot? I had a MAzda CX-7, and that thing was an inferno that would heat my garage, i never found the RDX to run really hot, in fact, it seems close to a normal engine, so maybe you have some other issues going on?

when you say properly cooling the engine, is it letting the engine run for few minutes before shut down?

thanks

if you feel that your engine is running very hot, combined with the fact that your coolant level is almost out, then id say thats grounds for a service trip?

i dont want to give you false and/or wrong advice...but logically, if it were me, if the car is hot and the coolant is almost gone, id prob swing by a dealer really soon.

Your BMW is an inline 6. Sorry, just couldn't keep it bottled up.

It may seem hot because you have a burning hot top mount intercooler in your face when you open the hood. To me it seems normal--we have had nothing but cars with TMICs for five years now. It think out Forester XT is hotter.

That being said, if something is bothering you take it in and get it looked at for the peace of mind. Then come back here and post the results so the next person with the same issue has some info.
