2007 RDX Tech Starting Issue

Hello All,

First post, I'm not very mechanically inclined and I'm hoping you guys might have an idea about what is happening with my RDX. I purchased my 2007 RDX Tech Pkg with 165K miles on it about 5 months ago. Everything is great except it has these random starting issues. I will get in the car one morning and it starts up no problem, the next morning, or even an hour or two later, and nothing, does not turn over or anything. It has a brand new battery, and I had a shop run a diagnostic and they said that nothing was wrong with my starter or alternator. Now here is the weird thing. When the car won't turn over at all, if I turn my key to the on position and put the car in neutral and let it roll just even a few inches and then put it back in park and try it again it starts right up! I've done this like 5 times now. It's almost like it is not registering that the car is in park or something. Any ideas what might be going on?

Thank You

Either you have a bad starter. Or next time when it doesn't start try pushing the gear lever (while in park) towards the engine and try to start the engine (while pushing the gear lever) with other hand. If it starts then you have a lose shift cable or something along the line, it could be transmission range sensor. If it starts using the method above then you might live with it, since it will do that occasionally not all the time. I had same issue with my TL and that's how i drove it for some time till i sold it. It it's not that you would want to check the range switch according to service manual and rule that out. If the range switch os good, then it is probably your starter or relay. Always start your diagnosis with simple logic and cheapest things.

The next time it does it I will give the gear lever a try and see if it starts. If it doesn't then I will look into your other suggestions. Thanks for your help.

Update: It did not take long for me to try your first suggestion. So when it would not turn over I pushed the gear lever forward with one hand and turned the key with the other and......it worked! So, that must be the issue. I will look into getting it fixed. And much thanks for your advice, really appreciate it.

It's most likely the gear position sensor. Some people call it a neutral safety switch. They are about $115 from the dealer. Rockauto has a couple of generic options for less than $80.
