Weird looking valve cover underside.

Did the valve cover gaskets on my 97 CL 3.0 because they were beginning to leak. The car has 56,000 miles on it, and while i have had it, she has over heated more than once resulting in a no start condition due to problems with the radiator. Because of this I have been worried I may have blown one of the head gaskets. Here is a photo of the underside of the rear valve cover closest to the fire wall. I know something is not right, but what that is I do not know. Can anyone shed some light on this for me. Head gasket toast, simple lack of maintenance causing this look, or something else I am missing.
