DIY: Bumper Removal (Finally with pictures)

Disclaimer: by using these guides, you are removing me from any liability that is related to any injury that might occur. I would suggest having a friend help you on these installs, if you are unsure about your abilities for any of these projects, get a professional to do it.

Credit goes to vxcl (mrk183@psu.edu) for the original write up, thanks also goes to 97acura3.0cl (jgiguere17@yahoo.com)and to KLepTo for additional info.

I made this because I love you guys

I finally had the time to take off my bumper and reposition my fog lights and to do so I had to remove my bumper and attatch it the inner fiberglass bumper reinforcment. On a scale from one to ten, I rate this diy a five.

Now enough of me. Finally, a bumper removal diy with pictures. Who would of known the day would come.

Estimated Time: 2 Hours, a bit difficult to remount bumper.

Tools: Below is a picture of what is needed, for those who cannot read
Ratchet
Short Socket Wrench Extension Wand
Long Socket Wrench Extension Wand
12mm Socket
Short Phillips Head Screwdriver
Long Phillips Head Screwdriver

Instructions:
1. Looking from the driver side door towards the front of the car, notice in the inner fender well at the bottom of the bumper where the fender well starts, there will be a small screw you need to unscrew with the short phillips head screwdriver. If you can get to it, try turning the steering wheel to make space for the screwdriver.

2. From the same position of removing the first screw, look directly up above that and you will see another screw, remove that screw. It might be hidden behind the wheel well cover.

3. After that move to the front right of the bumper where your front turn signal light is. To the left of the light you will see a small whole the size of a ink pen, look into it with a flashlight an you will see a screw, begin to unscrew that while pushing the turn signal in, until you can feel the screw is no longer unscrewing, the screw will not come out, as it is in a little holster to help you when reinstalling the turn signal. To remove the turn signal, push in and slide it to the right and the left side of the turn signal should pop out on it own, then moving it back to the left to completely remove the light, unscrew the bulbs sockets and move them aside, same goes for the turn signal.

4. After this look into the opening where the turn signal was and you will see one bolt and to the left side of the turn signal opening you will see in the bottom grill opening another bolt, for me the one on the outside was a copper color and the one closest to the inside was black. Remove these bolts with the extensions, ratchet, and 12mm socket.
<The opening on the left will not be as large, beause, I cut a piece of it out to mount my after market fog lights.>

Ugh :ugh: photobucket keeps on resizing this picture, oh well, best I can do for now.

5. Repeat steps 1-4 on the passenger side of your car.

6. After completing step 5, look under the bottom of the bumper, where the bumper meet the undercarriage, remove the two fastners holding the bumper to the undercarriage, they should pop out with a flathead screwdriver.

7. The last and final step, for me I had to push the bumper down to unmount it, then pull up to remove it from the radiator support. Then, pull backwards carefully, checking for anything else that is still connected.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remounting Tips:

1. On the sides of the bumper to remount the bumper to the fenders will be a slot and large screw to realign the sides of the bumper. Make sure you have them both in on both sides then remount the bumper.

2. It is alot easier with two people to unmount and remount the bumper.

You welcome everyone :toocool:

No, he went through the turn signal holes, but I don't think he could get them back on

This picture with the bumper off in front of the car is sooooo valuable! It clears up the confusion about the fasteners under the lights (which us 1st timers think must be removed first which leads us to think that the lights must come off first (chicken or the egg - LOL) BUT since the absorber behind the bumper is coming off with the bumper (and the fasteners are fastening the cover to the absorber) those fasteners can stay on.

for future SEO: This post is how to remove a front bumper cover from 1997 Acura CL.
