Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror 98 CL
Hey every one this is my second post and it is a DIY...
Ok I saw where some one wanted to know how to put in a auto dimming rear view mirror, but no one replied and I
wanted that in my CL. So I went to the junk yard and could only find an auto dimm on a 95 Infiniti J30, so I took it
and it was a perfect match direct bolt on. So here a few pic and a few words of how I did it.
I will not be responsible for any damage that may occur, Do this at your own risk.

This is where the sun visor bolts on. When you unscrew the sun visor there will be 1 wire connected to it just pull the 2
pieces apart and tie into any way you think is best but make sure it is insulated (Electric Tape).
Get a wire long enough to go from there to the whole you just made with about 2-3 inches extra. Pull the head liner down
just enough to thread the wire through to the whole you just made.

Connect all 3 wires except the Black one to the one you just ran. The Black wire is your ground
wire, wrap it around that top screw and screw it down.

So the red wire is the power to the lights correct? So you just tapped into that for a power source?

Yes, the red wire coming from the visor.
On the Auto Dimm rear view Mirror:
Greem = Power
The red/yellow red/blue wires = Illuminate, I think hi and low,( you know the lights are brighter when the head lights are off, and when you turn on the head lights they dimm a little.
Black = Ground

Mods, sorry to resurrect an old post. I also installed an auto-dimming mirror and did it a little differently and just wanted to share for anyone who does this in the future. Stumax, thanks for the helpful DIY write up on this.
I installed a GM auto-dimming mirror that I got on ebay; I think it came off of a Chevy Avalanche, but I'm pretty sure GM uses the same auto-dimming mirror in most models. It also has a compass and temperature display.
Unlike the CL's mirror, this one mounts to the windshield. I had to buy a self-adhesive mirror mount at the auto parts store and adhere it to the windshield a day before installing.

Since this mirror has a built-in compass and temperature display, I tied in the power to the map light so it works even with the headlights off. You can access the map light wires by first removing the clear plastic lens from the map lights with a screwdriver:

Once you get the lens off, there are two screws to remove the map light housing:

The map lights are powered by a 3-wire plug (this photo was taken after wiring in the mirror):

I used these tap splice connectors to connect the mirror power and ground wires to the map light wires:

If I tied it into the vanity mirror like Stumax, it wouldn't display unless I had my headlights on. The downside to tying the mirror to the map light is that it stays on all the time, even when the car is off. Unfortunately, the CL doesn't have any sort of battery rundown protection that would turn the mirror off after the car has been off for a set amount of time. However, the compass display LED uses very little power and that shouldn't be a concern.
The tan trim piece that covers the mirror mount snaps on to the mirror mount itself. Therefore, I sawed off the old mirror from its mount so I could snap the trim piece back on. I suppose I could have just glued the trim piece to the headliner, but that could be a problem if I ever needed to get access to the headliner. Plus the screws on the mirror mount hold the headliner up.

To calibrate the compass, you'll have to look up what region you live in. I think there are about nine regions. Cycle through the regions until the compass displays your region number. Then put the compass into calibration mode (display will read "C") and drive in circles a few times to calibrate it.
This was an easy, very worthwhile mod that makes nighttime driving a lot better. Plus the compass and temperature display (after I install the temperature sensor) are nice extras to have.

Nice work, I had been debating doing one like this, looks like with the cover over the old mirror mount it looks like nothing belongs there, nice work
