97 CL 3.0 Power steering fluid

Hi, power steering fluid reservoir very low, cleaned off the the reservoir cap and saw "use only Honda PS fluid."
Couple of questions: 1. is it really important to use only "Honda" fluid, or is any fluid ok...
2. had noticed the reservoir was a bit low couple of mos. ago, didn't notice the "use only Honda fluid" warning at the time, so had topped off with generic fluid...now reservoir very low.
Will have system checked for leaks, but is it possible the generic fluid did damage?
Thanks for responses. .

The fluid just needs to be Honda (?) compatable. Look in your owners manual for the fluid specification number. With it you can look at the fluid you used to be sure it is comparable. So I doubt if it caused any problem. You have a leak that you should be able to see the oily spot under the car.
