that is ONE interesting problem you got there man... all i can say is that the hightest my idle has ever gone when cold was 2k, but it sounds like you might need a professional to take a look at your car =/

sounds like it has to do with the cooling system. take the cap off the radiator and fill it up and let it idle for about 15 min. that will "burp" the system of any air bubbles. if that doesnt work you might need to clean out your iacv.

check ur idle air control valve. its attatched to your t/b, and usually has coolant hoses goin to it. it acts like a choke on carburated engines. there could be a way to clean it out, but id just replace it.

and if you spend the time taking the iac off, you might as well just clean it out. all you need is some carb cleaner and an old toothbrush. u gotta get the gunk off the little screen in there.

Sounds like an IACV. Not sure what engine you have but this might help DIY
You can try to clean it out first, but I would go buy the valve first, just in case. If cleaning it work, then you can just return it. If not, then you have the valve and don't have to install and remove everything twice like I did.

Same thing happens to my car, but only when i dont let it warm up for a few minutes. MIne jumps up crazy amounts, soars to like 6000 rpms, maybe more if I don't pop it into nuetral. When I come to a stop after, it idles at like 2-3000, then I'll gun it, and it goes away. kinda scary, ya know? I need to take it in and have them check it out since it's under warrenty, but I HATE not having my car for any amount of time. Hopefully it's not caused by modifications, or they probably won't even attempt to work on it.

Gollleeee Throtle body, that could be the ticket. If not, check for bad throttle position sensor. Just a guess. Good luck.
By the way, you mentioned problems with your timing belt... what could that be? It either works or it doesn't. Are your cams out of sync?

if you take your im off dont bother with the paper gasket. its a hold bitch to get it back on right without pulling the engine. spend the extra 10 bucks and get a thermal plastic gasket. its reusable so you wont fuck it up an dit reduces the amount of heat transfered into you im from the block.

I'm not sure, but it almost sounds like a bearing or possibly a shroud rubbing against the belt. Or, one other possible issue could be the water pump is nearing failure. In fact, I am almost certain that could be your issue. If you just recently changed it out, you might have been delt a lemon pump. Worth checking it out, unless it has not affected the performance of the engine. Which it may have, not withstanding a relation to your oddball idle issue. I think wilp is right about the throttle body, no matter how warped his sence of humar is, I gotta prop him on the suggestion that you clean it out and check the IACV. I think that was him who said that. Good luck. Oh yeah, it was, scrolled up a ways back... LOL

you timing belt is too tight, thats how mine is to. I put it on too tight and i really dont feel like climbing under the car again and fixing it. It sounds like i have a singer sewing machine under the hood.

as i said earlier, they are lots easier to put on and they wont blow out on you if you dont get them to seal properly. i went through 3 paper gaskets on my im and finally bought a thermal gasket. worked great the first time. plus it will lower the temp of the im which in turn will make cooler air for the engine. its definately worth your time if you are gonna take the im off.
