What to Look for when buying a 1997 2.2
My girl smashed up her car and I've always wanted a 2.2cl so. Guess what shes gonna be driving. Anyways what should I look for when buying one of these? Any problem areas or things I should know. Its an auto and has no leather. I hear the trannies are terrible on these cars. thanks in advance guys

First thing to check is going to be the underside of the car and the rear wheel well's for rust. Check under that rubber wheather stripping to see if rust is forming there, this is the first place it will occure. Check to make sure the car idles smooth and that the car doesnt make any high pitched noises. Make sure the windows roll up and down smoothly and at a decent speed. check the very very back were the rear speakers are for ashes from cigaretts, this is how you will truely know if its a non smoker. also make sure you check the front and rear bumber, making sure there aren't too many rock chips in the paint and make sure THERES NO RUST ANYWERE

dont get it unless your sure thats the model you want...
I have a 99 premium 3.0 and my friend had a 97 2.2 CL
he was so disapointed in the car it actually made him lose respect for the CL after looking at mine cuz he had no leather.. and his ac didnt work, no chrome outline with extra woodgrain and he kept complaining how slow the car was.
bottom line.. condition and appearence of the car makes the biggest difference.
must double check everything

No Leather? Slow? No Chrome? No wood Trim?
I don't know if "y'all" are trying to generalize based on one car ur friend has, but I beg to differ!
First off, the 2.2CL has the best durability in terms of tranny. The auto tranny is likely to outlast all of the other models. Second the 2.2CL Premium has all the Leather, Wood Grain Trim insie, and the chrome outlines. So technically the 2.2CL has all those things a 3.0 might have. As far as speed goes, well that's relative. The 2.2CL is still equipped with a vtec engine and is fast enough. But if you're looking for true speed, I don't think a stock '99 3.0 is going to outperform say a fixed up b16 civic so relatively speaking, having a 3.0 which is faster (not by much) than a 2.2 but also coming with a headache of tranny problems doesn't warrant y'all to say that 2.2CLs are no good.

i never knew the 2.2 premium came with the chrome trim and woodgrain where the shifter is.. i dunno maybe thats just my friends car then... but his was run down and slow..
i never said my friend had premium.. thats why i am asking him to select his model more carefully.. or else he might regret his choice.
acura CL is basically a jazzed up accord ... im not trying to sell him a 3.0 or nothing.. in fact i would suggest you get a 2.2 because of the tranny prob and GAS!! trust me.. 3.0 sux on gas.

thanks for all the responses guys. Her Last car was a 1996 Toyota Corolla which she wrote off last sunday. I need to get her into something I dont mind riding in the passenger seat when Im with her. She wants to get a Jeep TJ(FUK THAT!). So basically she said find her whatever I want thats a reliable car. Her budget is $5000 and these acuras are slim pickings. Im in Windsor Ontario so Im looking at the Detroit area which is known for Domestics. Anyhow I found a decent car for $4000 and I appreciate the advice to check the wheel wells for rust and Im glad the 2.2 tranny is ok. She doesnt need a fast car. She just smashed one cuz she drives like a maniac already. I just need to find her a car cuz Im giving her my G20T until I find something for her. Needless to say Im in a rush.
Thanks for everything and keep the advice coming. As long as its not a TJ I'll be glad

jeep
another thing you want to figure out is if the car is around or over 100,000 miles if the water pump and timing belt had been changed yet.. cuz that will set you back $500-1000
