Transmission fails at 55K?
My '97 3.0 CL with less than 55K started making what sounded like engine noise at idle in neutral. The noise is clearly audible at low idle but can't be heard over engine noise when I increase rpms. The mechanic at the local dealer diagnosed it after listening to it on a lift as a failing transmission and said the only option for repair is to replace it with a rebuilt tranny for something between $4000 to $4700 depending on whether I choose a 12 month/12K warranty or a 5 yr/50K warranty.
Other than the noise the car is running beautifully, shifting normally with no slippage. The transmission oil was changed with Honda ATF at 30K.
I'm not sure what to make of this of how to make sure that it is really the transmission.
Has anyone else has any experience with a CL transmission failing at such low mileage? Suggestions on how to get a definitive second opinion? Alternatives for repairing/replacing the transmission?
I doubt it would make much sense to put $4K into a car that's worth under $8K but I really like the car and don't want to just dump it without exploring options.
Thanks in advance for your advice and suggestions.

That's way too expensive. Shop around...actually get a second opinion because that's too soon for the tranny to go out, especially if you took care of it, which it sounds like you did.

check this http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.org/...prddisplay.jsp linear solonoid #7
this is one of the leading causes of transmission problems. u could try to replace it anyways its only 190$ or maybee u can find one on ebay cheaper. its the same p/n for almost every honda transmission made after 1996.
also there was a recall for the pcv valve relocation. mine humms alot at idle and goes away after it gets above a certain rpm. eather way check your pcv valve, just start your car and move the valve back and fourth and check to see if it changes pitch. heres the pcv valve. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/wilp99...5d.jpg&.src=ph its just below the red circle attatched to the valve cover. just move all the hoses back and fourth and listen for the pitch change
