Smokin'

I was waiting in a drive thru about 30 minutes ago and all of a sudden a shit load of smoke started pouring out of the front end of my car. My a/c compressor is completely f-ed up and nearly caught my engine bay on fire.

Obviously I need to replace it. Acuraautomotiveparts has a Denso unit for $400, but I need to get it fixed asap. How much should I be looking at spending for this if I just take it to a shop??

my in house techs always figure at least 500-600 if the compressor needs replaced on any car. If your compressor is 400 then you still need to figure labor and filling it with r-134. You could save some by putting the compressor on yourself then just having the rest done professionally, which you would have to do anyway.

I'd say it'll cost more at a shop being that they'll charge you for the part and for labor, and probably more for the part than u'd pay if u went and got it yourself

That's is probably what I'm going to do. I hardly ever use my a/c either.

Do you know how you're going to delete your a/c? A mechanic told me it wasn't possible, as the same belt drives the alternator. I'm considering the same thing.

You could probably get a shorter belt, and perhaps an underdrive pulley

Tell your mechanic to use a different size belt from the alternator to the crank pulley. Very easy to do.

But in texas with no A/C.....impossible! I nearly died out here from heat exhaustion!

<-- no a/c for 2 years.

Heh I'm up here in College Station (which is in Texas, too, for those of you who don't know), so I will fix my a/c eventually.

BTW, thanks for all your help, guys.

My a/c hasn't worked for almost 2 1/2 years, so I've gotten use to the heat. I figured if I could survive this summer and all the 100+ degree days, then it shouldn't be a big deal.

So I ended up ripping off my whole front bumper getting off the trailer. The guy spotting me apparently wasn't paying attention and told me I was fine to back up. I think my right front tire fell off the ramp and ended up catching the corner of the bumper.

I am more than just a little pissed.

o'reilly's sells a refurb compressor for ~$240 and a new one for ~$280. ebay is also a good place to look, apparently.

sounds like you got other more pressing problems, tho.

sorry, not really sure what you mean. the new one comes with a 1 year warranty, if that's what you're asking.

My front bumper was ripped off coming off the trailor when it was towed from the Ennis tracks to my house. They said they weren't liable because it was slammed. Don't know how true that really was.

well if they knew it was slammed they thye should have taken precaution loading it up....recently I got my car towed to pepboys the guy was smart...when he realised that teh car was lowered ...he did some thing very smart...aftrethe front wheels wheere on the inclined bed he put a piece of wood under the right side just ahead on the rear wheel with a part of the wood on the inclied ramp bed.... mind you the rear wheel was still on the ground...what this did was when he started pulling the car the rear wheel climbed the wood and the car got lifted enough for the muffler to clear the ground and safely be on the towing bed...now this can be done on either side thereby assuring safe tow.....

I got a bunch of shit from the tow truck guy because my car was lowered. He even went as far to say that it was illegal for my car to be that low because it made it difficult to tow. He went on and on about how if we were in a hurry, he would have ripped my car to shreds to get it on the trailer quickly. Getting on the trailer was pretty easy because we were able to use this dip on the street to even out the trailer to the ground. When we got to my parents house, I wanted to do the same thing with the driveway, but the guy wouldn't listen to me. Since I was the one driving the car off the trailer, I'm technically at fault even though the guy was being a complete dumbass.

Anyways, after further inspection I've realized that I'll probably need a completely new bumper because all the screw holes are completely f-ed up so I don't think the old one will go back on. And all the bulb connectors for my corner lights are broken. Not to mention that both my clear lenses are cracked now.

This whole situation has turned into a nightmare. I was going to save a ton of money with my broken compressor by just deleting my a/c, but now I have to spend all of it fixing my front end. I'm not even going to touch my car for a couple days so I can cool off a bit.

That's exactly how we got the 97 on/off the truck. Still scraped a bit, but hey. There's no excuse for damage being done while towing a car.
