Rotor glowing red

I noticed the last time I got in the car it seemed to drag a little. It was slowing down pretty quickly when I let off the gas.

Anyways, get out of the car, and my rear passenger side rotor is glowing bright ass red. Waited for it to cool, took the wheel off. The lever connecting the caliper to the e-brake cable was stuck. Tapped it lightly with a hammer, and the caliper opened up. Seems to work fine now (I'm not trying the parking brake) but I have a pad-shaped burn on my rotor. Both the pad and rotor are severly discolored/pitted and likely in need of replacement.

The only question is if the heat ruined anything else, like the wheel bearings.

you would have to hammer our the rotor and see if it did do any damage

i would take it in and have it looked at

Make sure the calipers pistons are lubed as a precaution. I had something like this happen to my old Celica once but it didn't happen again.

I doubt it screwed up anything other than the rotor or pads on that wheel. What you may have now is a wheel that has pads that are worn far more than the other side, which can cause pull. However, 75% of your braking power is the front brakes, so it's doubtfull the rears are going to cause any problems.

If you feel shuttering or vibration when braking, it's likely the rotor warped from the excesive heat. Just keep an eye on it.

i would have every thing that is made of rubber replaced. especially the caliper seal. the wheel bearings... i wouldnt ask a shop until i hear it starting to whine. it should be ok... thats what the heat shield is for. obviously the rotor needs to be replaced, with the pads... i would consider replacing the whole caliper. as the piston is prolly now misshaped, and will prolly get stuck, either inside or outside.

Is this common cause I am currently having problems with the rear right brake. The caliper appears to be sticking and the breaks squeak when I hit bumps or drive on uneven surfaces. sometimes it squeeks alot like the pads are low then other days it makes no noise at all. I am getting it checked out this week any suggestions.

same thing happened to my old mazda... you might not be getting brake fluid to the rear caliper which might mean that your master brake cylinder is going and that is some money. when your rotor heats up it expands which means it puts more pressure on the pads since it expands so... its basically braking. My mazda sometimes i would have to have it full throttle to make it go. I could only travel short distances with that car.

to the person who was talking about the squeeking when hitting bumps then disappearing... that is because your brake pads are low and the car has a sensor that makes a lot of noise when the pad is low... if it goes lower then the metal is making grooves in your rotor which is not good and you will need to replace your rotors... i had that happen to be but i didnt care since i had another set of rotors and pads to put on.

get it checked out. The reason it is heating up is probably the caliper being stuck which is probably a leak in the master brake cylinder... that is the thing that pumps the brake fluid to the calipers. or you might just have a leak in one of the hoses. masterbake cylinder is a pricey part and pricey to install i think on our cars im not to sure though.

http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.org/...SY80_B2513.gif

that is all i can find on the website... there is no catagory "master brake cylinder" so cant help you out there... ill keep looking

http://www.maximumautoparts.com/AC_B...linder_mo.html

there is one.. 112 bucks free shipping. not sure if you can find one cheaper. that is just the first one i came up with when ing it. "acura cl master brake cylinder"

hope that helps... labor wise not sure how much or if it is an easy task to do... im assuming it isnt and there is a lot of shit in the way.

you think thats really the problem?

it must be?

you think a comercial reapair shop like mineke or firestone

would handle this

or you think its a HONDA / .....(hopefully not) ACURA dealer situation.

I went to my local garage and they replaced both rear calipers (they apparently come in a set) and the set of calipers was $190. I also had the rear passenger rotor replaced, and new pads on both rear brakes. Everything seems fine now, I continue to use my parking brake without any problem.

I saw the old calipers, I don't know how they worked at all.. they were solid rust and flaking apart. I live in Cleveland so my undercarriage is exposed to salt 4-5 months out of the year, and I have 135,000 miles on it, so it's not unreasonable for a caliper to need replacement. My braking has been MUCH improved now.

Um, no. It only is bad if you didn't do it on purpose bro.

Rotors will glow when they get above 800deg. You can get them hot by lots of repetative, high speed braking. Keep in mind you need pads that can handle that kind of heat.

You can kinda see what I tapped on with the hammer in this picture:

The lever #13 (or #22) is what you need to move. When you take the wheel off, you can see its supposed to swivel and there is a pin that limits its motion. Spring #20 (or #27) is what is wound around it, which should make it open up after the e-brake cable is released. That lever/spring was all rusted shut and was stuck in the "e-brake pulled" position. I could tell my rotor burning was e-brake related because there was little resistence in pulling my e-brake handle anymore.

You know you've release the e-brake if you put the wheel back on and you can turn it by hand. You shouldn't be able to turn the wheel now by hand if its truely stuck. Tapping that little bastard once with a hammer released the caliper and I was on my way.

I had this same problem, same wheel even. I chalked it up to alot of rust and just replaced the caliper and the rotor. Haven't had the problem since.

how much it run you to replace the caliper and rotor?

did they recommend to replace all caliper's and rotor's?

and what u mean by "chalked it up"?
