Replacing a mid-pipe/resonator this weekend. Any tips?

My mid pipe / resonator is barking at me (the pipe that goes between the cat and rear muffler). So I’m going to replace it this weekend with a new aftermarket. Also going to pick up new gaskets and nuts/bolts. The bolts/nuts that are on there are VERY rusty. Just wondering if you guys have any tips on getting them off with the least amount of swearing possible (but some swearing is ok).

Things at my disposal:

Liquid Wrench
Breaker bars (with pipes if need be)
Nut splitter
Electric die grinder…

THANKS!

The tools you listed should be sufficient, and obviously use a good pair of eye protective wear cuz your gonna see a lot of rusty crap falling on your head. Hopefully the liquid wrench takes care of em and you dont have to bust out the other stuff.

Goggles are ready to go.... I'm going to let the liquid wrench soak overnight. Figured if I can for the two bolts/nuts off the cat end 1st then I can remove the mid-pipe / rear muffler in one peice to work on that end off the car.

Where are you doing it? You have access to a lift, or are you sliding under it in the driveway?

I have a jack and jack stands. Doing the job in my garage... Figured I can put the front on stands. Get to the two bolts off the cat. Unhook the rubber hangers of the mid-pipe and rear muffler as one piece and work the rear bolts off the car. Replace in reverse order…

pair of vice grips or two is always a good thing to have when working on exhaust pipes.

my car has only 45k on it and when i installed my GReddy evo2 cat-back the bolts were ridic. rusted

Ok,, I’m getting around to doing this on sat. After looking under my car last weekend I have a new game plan.

Instead of wrestling with the 3 rusty bolts between the B pipe and cat (and one of them is up top, can barley get a wrench in there), I’m going to remove the connection between the front of the cat and Mid-pipe. That connection only has two of those spring bolts and those are in great shape (no rust al all, must have been replaced last go around). Then I can remove the cat / B pipe / rear muffler in one piece and work on it off the car. Then I can easily cut / grind stuff off if need be. The only down side is I’ll need one more gasket (for the front of the Cat).

my game plan worked well. It was VERY easy to work on the rusty bolts off the car...
