Replacing brake pads
My rear brake pads are shot, my mechanic estimated $290 parts and labor, using an OEM metal pad. Now I just looked up some pads, and looks to me the nice metal ones are $50ish a piece, so that puts parts at $100. Is there seriously 190 in labor involved (about 4 hours)? Seems like an awful lot, and im pretty sure ive seen on here they are easy to do. Its a 98 2.3 by the way.

I was quote $260 from Criswell Honda in Germantown to install my front rotors (I have the dreaded '97 design). They're charging me 4 hours for the front (which is reasonable).
I believe the real actual time charged for the rears is about 2.5 hours (so say $162.50) [even if in reality it doesn't take that long]. That means your mechanic is charging you about $127.50 for pads!
The rears are pretty easy to do. Even if you buy the pads yourself and have your mechanic install them, it shouldn't run you more than $150 to $175 for installation (plus the price you pay for pads).

Thanks dust, i know my mechanic is generally reasonable, but I need to call and ask for an exact price assuming they dont need to do anything extra. They wont touch aftermarket parts either, if they are installing it they are supplying it, which I dont really like. If they cant do it cheaper I'll go to the honda dealer or this other dude.

to change your pads
to change out your pads it is generally the same with all hondas (and most disc brakes as well)
1. remove wheel
2. remove caliper sliding bolts (or unbolt caliper)
3. slide moving part of caliper off (or take off entire caliper) (suspend caliper with wire from spring)
4. pop pads out and springs (along with shims/anti-squeal plates) (remember the order and where everything goes)
5. depress the caliper piston into caliper (watch fluid in your reservoir and siphon out if necessary)
6. apply anti-squeal grease to shims and put in place along with springs and pads
7. slide over rotor
8. torque down all hardware bolts
9. torque down wheel nuts
10. check fluid again
11. take a test run
12. test e-brake (re-adjust if neccesary)
Each side takes about 20-30 minutes (if there are no pad relocation springs...which is a damn toyota thing to do)

Changed the pads this morning. The wheels were kinda stuck, but kicking the bottom seemed to work nicely. Now I know my mechanic is full of shit because the pads have about 20% left but i was already in there so i changed them anyway. Plus their estimate of $290 wtf, AEM ceramic pads (really made by nissin, which is oem) were $55 shipped without shopping around, and it took less than 2 hours for someone who had never done it. Only took that long because I had to figure out why the wheels wouldnt come off. Survived the test drive, which included an emergency braking because someone thought the double yellow line was where you center your car on a two lane road. Thanks for the advice
