power outlet behind ashtray?
stuck in traffic today, i started playing around with my car ('97 2.2 cl). one thing i did was remove the ashtray underneath of the stereo, just to see what was behind there. what caught my eye was an inch and a half long plastic thing, that looked like either some kind of power outlet or wiring harness or something. anyone out there know what this is, or what i could use it for?

thats so a dealership can run a detailed analysis of the
car, to see what's wrong in case of mechanical failure.
they plug a computer into it
basically to run tests

Correct!
It's the OBD II diagnostic connector to evaluate engine/tranny problems.
The dealer (or other shop) can diagnose problems. You can also buy a hand-held OBD II reader to diagnose problems yourself.

I work for Chrysler Dodge Jeep, and those computers are awesome. Some (Like our Dell Flash) can connect the car directly to DaimlerChrysler Corporate, and they can reprogram the car from Headquarters!
