Please Help!! Idle Problem!!!
Well, it has been happening for a while. But, when I turn my car on, and have my a/c running, my idle bounces up and down, it will start up to about 1100 rpms, but then drop down to about 150 rpms, EXTREMELY LOW. However, it has never stalled. Also, when driving, I will be maintaining a constant speed, and feel a jolt. Feeling as if my car goes faster, but then jolts back to where it was. During this time, my air is not running cold at all, took it to a mechanic, and he said it must be low on refrigerant, well, thats not the issue. I have no idea what this rough idling is all about, and I live in Tampa FL. I NEED COLD A/C!!! Any ideas guys?

Sounds like the compressor is still working, that's where you can still feel the jolt. Did you recharge it and still wasn't cold enough? Maybe there's a leak somewhere

ahhhh... I forgot to say, the ac does not cool down ever when the car has been sitting in the sun. I can drive it for hours and I will be sweating. However, at night, the ac will get ice cold

check to seeif both fans turn on when you turn the a/c on... if there is only one then there is the problem.. the condensor needs both fans on to keep the freon cold. and check for leaves in your vents near the windshield.. there is an evaporator in your dash that needs alot of air to blow thru it to keep the cabin cold. i live in tampa too.. where you located.. maybee we could get togather. im at macdill air force base.

oh yea forgot to mention the compressor at idle should be constantly running.. if its cutting in and out at idle more than once than say in a minute, then eather you have too much freon in or not enough. ive got to replace the evaporator on my explorer this weekend. stupid ice cold a/c place wants like 800$ to replace it.. i told them to keep thier time and ill do it my self.

yeah, that place tried to charge me 120 to "diagnose" a problem, their free diagnostic, included them telling me it was something electrical last time. Sounds like BS to me.
Anyway, why would all this stuff with the a/c keep making my car almost stall out. and I just had freon put in it by a mechanic, so I know I have the right amount in there.

WesMan, I think you have the wrong idea of what a thermostat does, it regulates the coolant for the engine, so it will not overheat, not the refrigerant for the ac.

If it is a problem with the electrics, it would have to do with the A/C idle adjustment. The computer will push open the throttle just a bit when the compressor comes on. If that mechanism is malfunctioning, then when your car is at idle, and the compressor comes on, the idle will drop dramaticly. This mechanism is controled both with vacume and by electronic sensors that report to the ecu and the climate control unit. If for some reason a sensor or the vacume components are compromised, your idle will be iratic and your a/c will not function properly. As for the dash thermostatic sensor, if it is damaged, it will not tell your control diaphrams to open in your climate control system. If you notice, when the cabin starts to get to the corret temporature, matching the value you have set on the control, the fan slows and the vacume diaphrams open to alow more cooled air to flow through the dash. You can hear the actuators when it is working properly. As for the compressor turning on and off, that is also a function of the climate control system... even at idle, the compressor will cycle on and off depending on the requirement of the climate control system... If it needs cooler air, it will turn on, if it needs warmer air, it will turn off and close the evaporater vent diaphrams to let heated air from the heater core in. If this mechanism is malfunctioning, your air flow diaphrams may not be opening properly in the heat of the day.
