:agree: VTEC deactivates if the oil is low.

Palayah8ta 07-18-2005 02:29 PM

the first time it threw that CEL, i took it to my friends mechanic , he said these words exactly:
"your vtec is messed up, u might need to redo your cams, or do a rebuild." i stared at him for a few seconds with my mouth wide open and then said."m taking it to a honda guy, i think u just made that shit up." he got mad and i left...

some mechanics can be stoopid, but i guess i cant blame a guy for trying to feed his kids.

You can't even really trust a dealership...Mechanic told me I had an oil leak oil level never changes, and its full?

OK bro. I am going to give it to you straight. THIS EXACT SAME THING HAPPEND TO ME and my motor only had 60,000 miles on it. I too took it to Acura, and they told me to change my oilpan, because I had a dent in it, (CHECK YOURS). They said that my oil pickup was blocked and that if I replaced the oil pan, everything would be dandy. So I spent $80.00 on an oilpan and when we pulled the oilpan off...I found the remainder of one of my thrust bearings lying in my oilpan along with metal shavings clogging my pickup screen. I could have rigged it up with a bearing, but my motor would not of lasted long. This was the reason for my H22 swap. I am much happier now with the car, but it cost me out the ass for the entire swap. I hate to tell you this man, but if your VTEC is not getting enough oil, and if you have plenty of oil in your car.....You may be in the same situation. Something is blocking your oil-flow=NOT GOOD!!! I am not sure, but it could be your oil pump, or some other component related to oil flow.
What happend to me is I pretty much starved my entire engine for oil.....I recently have pulled my F23 apart and found that all of my main bearings, along with my thrust bearings are blown out. I never did spin a bearing, so if there is no damage to my crank, I may rebuild the motor with new bearing sets and drop it into an Accord...but CHECK THAT SHIT OUT IMMEDIATELY BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. On the other hand, it may be that one of your VTEC components has failed, and your oil flow is fine, (which from what Acura told me VERY RARELY HAPPENS).....Either way, check that shit out immediately!!

Look on the bright side...if your motor is fucked....TIME FOR AN H22 SWAP!!! Let me know if you need one. I shopped everywhere and finally found a H22 and the P13 ECU for $1,590.00 SHIPPED!!! The rest will be labor, and gaskets, seals, belts, and any goodies you decide to put on, etc.

Sorry for the ramblings, but I have been EXACTLY where you are just a couple of months ago.Good luck!!

red99cl2.3 07-18-2005 06:02 PM

thing is if i reset the CEL i can go passs the 4k but i dont feel vtec at all. could that still be the oil or is my engine gone????

thirdrail-1 07-18-2005 06:15 PM

You check your oil pan?

red99cl2.3 07-20-2005 01:53 PM

no i havent checked the oil pan, i'd hate to do this but i;m gonna have to go to honda to have em check it out. damn i hate those bastards 89.99 to check it out and 95% of the time it doesnt have shit to do with what they say. i bet you they will tell me its because of my intake.

bluedrms98 07-20-2005 02:03 PM

Same problem - only when engine has been warmed up though

My engine refuses to go beyond 4000 rpm as well, but only when the engine has been warmed up, like driving for about 20 minutes or more. Before that, the VTEC works as expected and I can feel it at 4K rpm.

Oil level is ok, restrictions due to the oil pan would not be dependent on whether the engine is warm or not, oil pump should be able to pump warm oil more easily so I cannot blame it...

So much good info can be found if one searches

BUT: Does the light with the oil can and a drip mean "low oil"? It's blinking.

I couldn't find that when I searched "oil* light" so thanks.

just reading some of this thread made me die laughing.

I'm not sure, but check your owners manual if you have one, thats second best if not first best to searching.

CLpwner 06-03-2008 08:50 PM

Eh, I just decided to grab a quart of 10w-30 and dump it in... I'm gonna get an oil change soon any who... but yea.

The flashing oil light is low oil pressure. Which will happen if there is little or no oil. I remember a long time ago I had a decent oil leak that went unnoticed in the accord and the light started flashing when i was doing 70 around an onramp because the little oil that was left had slid to the opposite side of the pan
